Title: Converting a 5 reel harness into a 3 reel harness.
Post by: stayouttadabunker on January 18, 2011, 06:02:02 PM
I saw this in a machine the other day.
I HAD to take it out and show you guys...especially S+ enthusiasts!  :89-

I wanted to post some info on it for educational purposes...lol
Seriously, I would never do this conversion on a 5 reel harness -
I'd just go find a normal 3 reel harness instead.  :5-

Anyways, it looks like Pin-5 & Pin-6 were either jumped or spliced
on reels #4 and #5 to convert it to a 3 reel harness.  :96-

I'm always amazed at what slot bench techs do instead of just getting the correct part.  :25-
I wonder where the glass/strip kit is for this harness?  :184-

Interesting. When looking at the schematics, it looks like every reel (the reel it's self) has a jumper between  pins 4&5 and they are all tied in series, putting a ground on the 'reel mech' input to the MPU. It must be a quick way for the MPU to know if a reel has been unplugged. I just looked at my reels and they do indeed have a jumpers on the reel. So this looks like a pretty 'safe' mod, since it just simulates a reel and completes the circuit.

I would rather put a jumper in, than splice them so it's easiier to reverse if you ever needed to use them.

Yes poppo,
If the jumper isn't in there, the machine shows an reel error code.

Hey Bunker, could an s2000 harness be modified from 5 to 3 reels? The reason I ask is that I picked up another set of LED reel backlights and its for a 5 reel machine. If I can mod it to 3 reels then I'd like to put it on my Money Mad Martians game as the LED lights light up much better than the origionals and shut off completely when not in use by the game.

You probably could do it
There is set of wires that when the reels are installed complete a logic circuit.
That is how the machine detects a reel unplugged.
it works the same way a closed loop alarm circuit works.

The loop is the Lower left two pins with the harness in the machine, and reels (I am looking at the regular back lit reels)
Reel one connector is a yellow (mine has a slight green tint) and a green with brown tracer
Reel two connector is green with brown and green with red
Reel three connector is green with red and green with grey
The reels themselves have a short loop wire when all the reels are installed the completes the yellow wire to the green with gray wire.
Place a jumper in reel 4 and reel 5 connector to complete the circuit.

Thanks Foster :89- I ordered a reel set from slotpartsstore on ebay mostly to get the extra reel motors, but seeing as the reels were LED backlit I thought I'd try and make use of those to. I'll post it if it works

Sorry I couldn't get to you earlier cowboy but I'm glad
you got excellent help from our Mr. Foster!

I totally agree with what Foster posted on the configurations and I'm pretty sure it will work.
I've actually seen the jumper plugs for sale somewhere.
All you do is plug the jumper molexes onto the ends of the unused reels.
However, with my present aging CRS mind - I don't recall who was selling the sumbeeches....lol

cowboygames   S 2000  reels for a three reel machine are different than  reels for a 5 reel machine. The reel basket for 5 reel are not as wide and only have a total of 3 light bulbs per reel. The baskets will not interchange. Before I forget the LED backlit have a different control board, I think that's what turns the lights completley out. ( Not 100% sure )

I will agree with Buzz the led controller and incandescent controller are not interchangable.
mainly because the incandescent controller controls a 24V power source to the lamps and the led controller controls either 5V or 13V power source to the LED's.
About the physical difference between the reel baskets, I leave that to others to comment on.

Thanks for the replies Buzz and Bunker. I've got the right controller coming also : :89- This is my second LED conversion. The main reason for buying this set was to get the extra reel motors. Had to find a use for the harness and lighting so I thought about a 3 reel conversion. The reel baskets will go in the pile with the 5 from the first conversion.

Actually you can use the LED backlit controller for both LED and incandescent backlit reels. I am currently using one in a 3 reel machine at the moment.

ah! That's good to know Idesign  :89-
At least we know Cowboys' controller will work!  :50-
I never tried it yet...
