Title: Lost my Bill Validator...(RESOLVED!!!)
Post by: Yoeddy1 on January 29, 2011, 01:25:26 AM
So I was changing games today, and went through a clear/keychip procedure just like I've done in the past.  I have an MEI SC 6602 DBV in my machine that is currently not lit up.  If I look inside I can see the green light blinking as it always does, but the bill entrance light is not lit up.  If I open the door the MEI has a button that can be pressed.  If I press and let off the button after a couple of seconds, then I get a green and yellow light.  If I do it again, I get the green and red light which turns on the bill entrance lights.  I'm assuming this is just a diagnostic button.  Anyway, once it goes back to a green flashing light, I close the door and the game goes to ready.  I can drop coins in and play it fine.  I checked menus and the DBV is enabled.

Any help would be appreciated.  When I power it on, the DBV grunts and makes the usual sounds...the entrance light just never comes on and it wont take bills.

Thanks,
Jason

I know nothing about those games, but does it have to have a denomination set like on a S+ or it won't work even if the BV is enabled?

Yeah, I know Stat...all good man!

I threw another game in running a clear/key procedure...same deal.  Downloaded the manual...error code section says:

LED Indicators Status You Need to:

Green solid:
Normal, Take no action

1 Flash Green:
Disabled by machine interface, Fix the machine condition (e.g. fill the coin hopper)

2 Flash Green:
Disabled by network interface (if applicable), Correct the network condition

What I don't understand, is that there isn't an error code being thrown up on the machine.  The DBV is flashing per 1 above, but there isn't a condition to fix.

Grrrrrr.  Any ideas?

Jason

Did you set the BV limit under Machine Options Limits?

Did you set the BV limit under Machine Options Limits?
Yep.  Set to 1000.00.  Usually don't even have to mess with that when a clear/key is performed.

Dont recall if there is a clear BV CRC mismatch option in the S2000 menu tree. You can also try disabling the BV from the menu and then enabling it again.

Just finished up...it's kaput.  Resets galore, went from flashing green light, to 3 lights on solid (hardware failure) and now no lights or noises at all.  Good news is that the game still plays fine and is working.  Checking with my dealer for a replacement.

Thanks guys,
Jason

I take it you checked the harness connectors and wires.  It does sound like a BV hardware error though since the machine doesn't see an error.

Thanks,
Wayne

                                          R.I.P.

You were a good bill validator during your lifetime and you served us well.
You worked all those years through thick and thin and nicotine and cigar smoke.
They never gave you a day off and whipped you like a dog.
It's sad for now it's time to say good bye.
Please let us all bow our heads and give Yoeddy's DBV a moment of silence.

Now comes the 65 million dollar question...

I'm trying to get a replacement through my dealer.  Do I need to replace it with the same model?  It looks like the assembly comes out pretty easy.  What do these things roughly run price wise?  Suggestions?

Ok, here's the deal.  I have the MEI out of the machine now.  Below are some photos.  I need to get this resolved.  I'm not 100% that the bill head is the problem, but I'm pretty sure that the unit that the unit that the bill head clips into with the pigtails coming out of the back is screwed.  Some of the contacts are bent up and one is actually broken.  Oh well.  That said, one member contacted me and mentioned that he has this exact model but it is programmed for a 'WMS' style of communication (RS232).  He said that I would need Netplex programmed into it for it to work in the S2000, but that he doesn't have the program or firmware that I would need to do that.  It may just be on a PLCC (square) chip that you can remove from your old unit and install in this one.

I took a picture of the bill head with the cover off exposing the PLCC chip that he mentioned.  Anybody know if swapping chips would be all that needs to be done to go from WMS to S2000?

Below are the photos of the the pigtail/connectors that come out of the MEI unit and one of the connectors in the machine that go into the MEI unit.

The others are photos of the bill head cash box, etc.  If anybody has any suggestions, or has the parts, let me know.

Another member also mentioned that he has a complete wba set up for the S2000 which includes outer and inner chassis, head, bezel, transport and cash can.  Will this even work with my current set up per the connectors in the photos that I have in my machine, or am I limited to MEI?  What would I need to know?

Ok, I'll shut up now...hopefully I can fix this one.  Again, thank goodness my machine still works fine with coins.  ;)

Thanks guys,
Jason

Tha manual makes it sound like replacing the chip is all that is needed. Actually it says that once it is removed, from the unit, that its the only way to update the firmware.

"Note: Once you remove the programmed PROM(perform a chip change),the bill acceptor can no
longer be programmed by the PPM. Once a PROM is inserted or removed, the bill acceptor
disables the ability for the PPM to communicate with the bill acceptor. Future software changes
can only be made by replacing the PROM (chip change)."

Did you already remove the chip? The socket looks empty.

No, that's how the setup has always been and the manual doesn't really show anything different from mine.  Is the tiny square in the middle the chip maybe?  To be honest, I'm not even sure mines screwed up.  I might be able to put this head on a replacement transport if I can get it.  Maybe it would work.

Other than the spade type connectors everything looks ok.
I wonder where those spade connectors go?
they go to cash box switch and can go to tracking system.
Found the answer in the manual, are they used on your machine?

Do you have another machine you could temporarily setup the MEI in? Do not remove the BV in the test machine.
if you need room in second machine just remove hopper and maybe black coin chute, so it can set next to the one in place.
IF you know how to do the optics bypass then you test the MEI in another machine, without having to do major surgery on the second machine.
you might have to clear a tilt or two and re-detect Netplex devices.

I wonder if the bezel is the same for MEI and JCM, reason I say that the bill entry for the MEI is definitely different than the WBA.

Hasn't it struck anyone that it's kind of strange the BV goes out at exactly the same time a game kit was changed?  Jason have you checked the pins on the main board to see if one are more got bent ?? Have you checked the Net Plex connections to the mother board ??

Yep, yep, and yep.  Like I said, I noticed that the leaf spring like contacts on the DBV transport are bent up...one's broken for sure.  How it happened, not sure.  Plus, there is zilch power or motor noises coming from the unit at all now, and with the light patterns changing, and now nothing, I suspect hardware failure.  The S2000 never threw a code and it's still playable.  I just took the MEI hardware out of it.  The prices that are being offered up for new hardware from various members is fair...just not sure what I should get.

Understood Buzz.  I wish I had another machine to test with, but I don't.  If I was to get a multimeter and touch the contacts on the ends of the cables on the S2000, could that tell me a story?

If your not getting any power to the BV, you can buy a whole bunch of new BV and I'll bet none of them will work. I'm trying to tell you the BV gets it's power from the net plex connections on the mother board. ( the same area you were in when you removed the MPU to change the game kit.) I would have check each and every connection that go to the mother board, some of them are a pain in the butt to get to but need to be checked.

I have a couple of older model Mars BV and they use a different wire harness than a WBA. ( I've never installed one )  But a WBA in a S 2000, sometimes you have to recalculate the CRC 4.8.2.1  I don't know if this needs to be done with a BV like yours.

The Red ,Black, and White wires go to a micro switch that the cash can depresses when it's installed. Much like the cherry switch on a S 2000 that none of us hook up.

Jason,

My mind is still a bit scattered right now, but I seem to remember that there is a function in the S2000 Software (But it may be in iGames though??? I can't remember now, and I am not near any machines to look for you... At least machines that I can open up without being thrown in Jail!!!) where you select NETPEX AUTOCONFIG or something like that.... The machine then scans the Netplex bus for devices. Might be worth a try looking for that? I was just trying to spark an idea that someone in their right mind can chime in on... :5- :200- :72- :97-

Well ladies and gents, I received the WBA12 kit from Darrell (slots4home) today.  Installed it and re-ran a netplex discovery and it showed "installed."  I had run the discovery per Tilt's suggestion early on with the MEI and it never took.  That machine was changing light patterns left and right, and as I mentioned, it eventually showed a fatal error (all three lights on) and then gave up the ghost resulting in no more power.  I still believe the contacts that the bill head mates with are damaged on that unit.

At any rate, of course I gave it the ol spit shine cleaning and it runs like a top.

Darrell, if you see this note, BIG thanks again for the great deal and fast shipping!  Also to the rest of the crew that participated in this thread.

Thanks,
Jason

My first thought exactly Buzz!  You know, what's interesting is that the GK appears to have an older version on it.  Can these be updated?  Not a big deal.  I think the GK won't take the new fives.  Haven't tested the S2000 yet with new fives.  Probably doesn't either.

I might be wrong but I think if it's a 12 it has to be flashed to update.  Ben could tell you for sure, he flashed a bunch of them for me.

WBA 12 transport is flash and WBA 13 transport is EPROM (replace the chip)

But I think when you do either you may have to calibrate them.

So I guess the questions for a numb skull like me, are:

Is there any benefit to flashing them to the latest and greatest version?  If so, what are the benefits?  (Takes new 5's?, faster performance, etc)

How does one update the hardware?  Assming it's the flashable type, which both of mine appear to be.  Does it have to be sent to somebody to flash and calibrate?

Thanks,
Jason

I did updated a couple of my WBA 13s by changing the chip. Didn't have to recalibrate them.

Only benefit that is took the new fives.

"Is there any benefit to flashing them to the latest and greatest version?"

Good question...
Personally, I almost never put a $5 bill in mine.
I normally use a $1, and a $20 or a $50 if I have one...lol

Using a $5 bill would take forever to rack up credits to play a machine.
How often do YOU put a $5 bill in it?

Yeah, I know it's not a big deal, but for one that has update'itis with PC's, networking hardware, Blu-ray players, printers, etc...if there's newer firmware/software available, I'm gonna flash it.  I've reached in my pocket before and pulled out a 5 and thought to myself "Oh wait, I can't use this."  Is it a pain?  No.  But knowing that a solution available is the splinter in the mind.

Anybody out here flash the 12's?

I hardly ever put money in my machine. I drop tokens into it instead.
In fact I flipped on sw1-5 on the WBA 12 in the S2000 and the DBV-200 in the S+ since I never see a $100 bill but want the Sentry's and the BV decals, to illuminate.

Putting money in home machines is just too risky if the law knocks on the door.

Probably depends on the state. And generally as long as no money from other parties (i.e. outside of the household) is won/lost, no gambling exists.

And here we have this:
"Texas is one of the most lenient states when it comes to slot machine ownership. At this time, residents are allowed to own any type of slot machine that they wish."

But as noted above, without a warrant, why would the law be looking at my machines that they don't know I have? :103-

I'd like to go visit Buzz & Capt as well and check out all the hiding spots... :79-  :96-
