When you clear a machine and then turn it on, it will display three blanks right at the seams of the reel strips (unless three blanks is a paying combination, in which case it'll show one symbol and two blanks).
For the second machine, Hit The Top, was it ever working? Does the Barcrest computer in the top box have power? Is any of the top glass lighting up when you turn the machine on? For as much support as you're getting from this site (and then profiting by selling machines to your customers), I'd strongly encourage you to contribute to the site. Tech support is free, but the more support you ask for, especially as a business selling slot machines, the fewer responses you're going to get from members here if you're not a contributing member of this site.
