Make sure all of the rollers are free of gunk and wipe down the optics, but don't use alcohol. Updating the firmware will not help if the unit is dirty or needs calibration. One of the vendors here offers updating, cleaing and calibration if you can't get it working on your own, but I forget who.
If you didn't already know, here is how to open the head to clean it.
