Title: Any ideas on how to replace / repair heat sink mount on 504B mpu?
Post by: Seven on March 14, 2011, 01:09:56 AM
The little thing that mounts the heat sink to the circuit board is broken.  I've attempted to attach a photo but if it does not work the mount is a little three fingered silver color where two fingers are on one side and the middle on the other.  I don't know what the mount is called but it looks like it had a very small pin that went through the board and was soldered in on the back side.  There are two mounts for this heat sink.  The heat sink is black and in the upper left-hand corner if the tray "handle" is towards the viewer.  I'd like to fix this.  Any ideas on how to fix or where I can get a replacement?  There is an electronics store in town but I don't know what to call this thing if I were to call them.

All you need is to heat up the pin that's in the hole, solder a piece of wire in there and solder the wire to the heat sink.

Bunker is there some special solder you use to solder wire to aluminum ?  ( heat sink )   :279- :279-

Also the fact that ithat aluminum is anodized. I do not think soldering will work.

The tab that holds  the heatsink is steel...no?
If not just loop and twist some bare wire around the lower "fork"
of the heatsink leg and solder the wire into the hole?

Thanks for the replies.  I carefully removed the broken mount from the heat sink and the little mount thing attracts a magnet.  So, should I use a small piece of copper wire?  I don't know that I would have any steel wire around.  Andy.

BUZZ i have a aluminum wire type soldering product that you can solder aluminum to itself  or to die cast (Potmetal)

I have one Miller welder that will weld Mig, Tig, Stick, and Heli-arc. I also have two wire feed machines. I tried aluminum wire in the large one, what a joke. Every time the wire would stick a little bit the drive wheels would break the wire. All you could  do was pull out 10 feet of expensive wire and start over. When you were all done you had a terrible looking weld and so much wasted wire on the floor it just wasn't worth it.  If your good ( I'm not ) you can gas weld aluminum.

I just posted that bit to Bunker to mess with his head !!!!!!!!!!

While you guys were messing with each other, you gave me a thought.  I have some mig wire, .030, and how 'bout I use that?  Andy.

Try to use a piece of copper wire to solder the heatsink holder to the board.
If I said steel - I was wrong...sorry.
You need to solder something to the board's hole.

Buzz is always messing with my screwed up little brain...  :96-

If only one of the two stabilizers is broke then you really don't need to worry much about fixing it. They work as a ground also in some cases, but mostly they are just there to hold it to the board and the transistor is clipped to it for positive contact. I wouldn't get all happy trying to fix it if you potentially risk damaging the board. It's just not that important

IGT had this great idea of shoving the MPU
tray holder right up against the left wall
of the cabinet - just so techs can break everything
when they pull them out.  Including knuckles... :96-

Leaving well enough alone is usually good advice but the broken mount would probably keep me awake at night.  Thanks for the replies, I'm thinking about the wire idea right now but we'll see . . . .  Andy.

I also agree that leaving it alone would be fine. But all you have to do is flow some solder in there. A Weller would be best as a regular soldering iron might not be able to heat it up enough.
