Title: I+ 044: EPROM SYNCHRONIZATION ERROR
Post by: Worldwide Gaming on July 20, 2011, 01:55:30 PM
I've got a number of IGT I+ 044 machines that have decided, en masse, to start throwing the error: EPROM SYNCHRONIZATION ERROR - which then tosses you into a continuous loop of attendant key turns and test button presses...   :103-

Clear chipping doesn't work, pulling the battery doesn't work, swapping mainboards doesn't work.   :279-

Has anyone ever run into this before and what's the fix?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the chips are in the wrong sockets?  :129-
Have the chips been moved recently?
I'd check the chip locations against a known working machine...

I think this issue is backplane related and not main board or flash.

The backplane has an EEPROM as well and keeps some data which I think is the error you are getting.  I could be wrong here but try another backplane.

Good point...and I would check to see that the E4 chip (I think that is what it is called) is installed on the back planes...this is the small 6 or 8 pin chip.

It's an 8 PIN Serial EPROM, most are in a socket some are not, I have seen both types.

What is labelled/stenciled/imprinted onto the i-game backplane serial eprom chip?
If they are the same as S+ motherboard 24C04 8-pin chips - I may have some brand new blank spares available...

Bunker,

They are different... I believe that they are 24C256 chips. I will check my spare chips for an exact part number if my mind was wrong!  :200-

Ah Oui ! Having larger chips would make more sense as the i-games have more crap to remember!  :72-

OK, for the record here for future readers:

Standard i-Games on 3902 use 24C16 8pin DIP 16K Serial E-squared EEPROM, sample part number M24C16

Standard i-Games on 044 use 24C256 8pin DIP 256K Serial E-squared EEPROM, sample part number AT24C256B-PU (Be careful here as the Atmel chip is actually labelled ATMLU018 :279- )

P.S. I think that the E2 size issue deals more with what chip was available in production at the time of the design than the amount of data, but I am sure that it is more data too.

Excellent information on the i-game backplane chip Capt! :89-
Thanks for looking that up for the i-games guys!  :3-
Even though it is known that you have the "magic powers" -  :93-
I gave you a plus + karma!  :96-
