Title: Testing a crystal
Post by: gonemad on August 26, 2011, 08:21:24 AM
Hey guys. I want to test the crystal on my 4 slot neo. It boots to the green screen and sticks there. I have replaced it from a parts board, but it too may have been bad as it still boots to the green screen. I do not have the Hertz option on my multi meter but have seen channelmanic say it can be done with a logic probe. Can someone explain this to me? :103-

Look for a signal that lights up both the high and low LEDs. You typically don't get this from both legs of the crystal so don't let that throw you.

Great. I will check that today. It's a strange problem. The other day, all the game would do is boot to the calender error. Last night a friend wanted to see it, and it booted right into the games. weird. Now today if I try power it up, it will probably go back into calender error.

Typically if it's booting to anything, the crystal is probably fine.

Hmmm... Try resoldering the crystal... If that's not it then you most likely have a bad power trace.

Resoldered the crystal and tested. No signal on one leg and only low on the other. Found an old pc motherboard and robbed the 32.768 off it and it booted up fine. Is a good day, even got my Baseball Stars 2 cart working.

Sweet! :)

Always great to bring a game back from the dead. :)

I have one more 4 slot to fix. Could be the same problem. Just need to test with another new crystal. This will probably go up on the FS block along with some other Neo parts.
