 :103-  I don't think I've ever seen that.

Since it still plays, what happens to the display when you play it and win? What happens to it when you have credits, either from a win or a bill?
Maybe your display or display harness is just bad. :103-

Would a tournament chip behave like that?

It's been so long since I've put a chip into tournament mode that I honestly don't remember.

He hasn't answered my questions yet about how it plays.

it registers the credit just doesnt display it

When you go into the self test mode, does the display work properly? One of the tests actually tests the LEDS.

yes it does

Go into self test and do this and let us know what chips it says you have

I guess another question is - did it ever work correctly?

1224 and yes it did

I don't have any info on the SP1224. Out of curiosity, what SS chip is in there?

Also, do you have a clear chip and a set chip for your machine?

1224 and yes it did

Is that the game chip or reel? What was the other number?

If that is a SP1224, I don't have a listing for it. :103-  Maybe someone else does.

:204- PSR sent to coxwho1 and poppo; woulda included you too StatFreak but your email is hidden  :52-

hopefully it helps out, i don't know jack about the S Plus games so i think that's all i have to offer  :25-  good luck

The PSR says:

S-Plus Stepper Slot Version SP1224 (Mini Bertha)

GAME TYPES
Type 0 (no special features) and Type 19 (4th Coin Buy-a-Pay).

I saw nothing else different than any other standard SP. So I have no idea why it's acting like that.

Short of using a clear chip, I would pull the CMOS (just for a few seconds to make it lose it's memory), then clear the 61 error you will get and see what happens.

Do you have a mini-bertha machine, or a standard sized slot machine?

I'm wondering if the display wiring/commands would be different on a mini-bertha and maybe he just needs a more standard SP chip if he has a typical machine?

Except he said it was working correctly before.

But I suppose it should also be asked if it worked before with THIS  set of chips.

It's still an interesting question. Why would IGT specifically identify the chip as being for a Mini Bertha if there weren't something unique in the programming that was required? Of course, it could be that a Mini Bertha chip will work in any machine, but not the other way around. :128-

One difference that comes to mind is that the angular momentum of the stepper motors would be slower on a Bertha. They might have changed the lower limit allowed to prevent reel tilts.

But let's get this guy's machine running... :79-

We know it's not tournament related.

Here is the PSR from morning_glory21. Nothing special that I can see.

Which supports the theory that the difference is in the code.

Here is the PSR from morning_glory21.

Thanks for the post -- I've updated the list (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=68.0) with the info from that PSR.

The reel timing theory makes sense.

But we still need to know if this is the original chip set that was working before. As it stands we know:

The display appears to be ok since it works in self test.
The game plays, so it is not totally FUBAR

If this was the same chip set that was working before, I would suggest a CMOS pull first, and if that doesn't fix it, then a full clear (assuming he has a clear and set chip)

Note: I could have sworn I already posted this, but maybe not.  :103-

No, it was about the reel timing too after Stat's post. Maybe I never hit 'post' before I got sidetracked.  :5-

Can we see a picture of this machine?
I'm still not convince that it's a Big Bertha machine.
1224 and yes it did
When you saw this, was there any other numbers alternatively flashing?

Also, let me see a photograph of the chips onboard the MPU.

I'm still not convince that it's a Big Bertha machine.

It may not be, but the SP 'should' still work (and at this point apparently was previously working). As Stat said, there may be some timing differences for the reels, but in theory it should work in any other machine as long as the reels don't spin slower than a Bertha (if a Mini Bertha even spins at any different speed). But a regular SP might time out, giving a reel tilt if a Bertha does spin slower.

Having worked with stepper motors a lot in the past (building a home-brew CNC machine), you can spin up a stepper pretty fast and still have it stop on a dime. However if the motors are not sized for the load (i.e. the reels), then inertia could make it go too far, and thus using a slower stepping speed would be better.

Hopefully the OP will come back and answer some of the questions.

I'm not sure about the mini-berthas, but the big machines definitely spin more slowly (in terms of RPM). You can clearly see it in a casino.

Of course, that doesn't mean that different timeout code is needed. It might also depend on how many stepper positions there are per revolution.

We do know that if the timing of the stepper doesn't match the expected value it tilts, because an S+ will give a reel tilt if the reel rubs against a harness or something else on the door while in play.

Coxwho1, I see you haven't been back since last night, but when return, let us know the SS chip number as well.
AND:
...Also, do you have a clear chip and a set chip for your machine?

Guys, I'm thinking that the machine could use a clear, and if that fails, a replacement SP chip. Anyone else agree or have a better idea?

Reasoning:

The display is functioning correctly (all LED segments work and display numbers correctly in test menus) and the SP code drives the display. The rest of the machine appears to be operational. It could also be the MPU board, but I'd start with the clear and then the SP first.

Agreed.  We still need/want confirmation on the type of machine (is it a mini bertha or just a standard machine), and if it ever did work properly with this SP chip.
