Title: Video for the JCM WBA-11
Post by: gposing on September 15, 2011, 08:19:04 PM
I found some good videos on youtube for the WBA-11.  I would bet that the guy in the video is on this forum, but since I am new I thought I would share my findings.  You can search youtube for jcm at techfest or here is the link for the first video:

The eBay poster is a member, but I don't know if the JCM tech is.

Wow, that's at least as much or more than I ever wanted to know about how to diagnose problems in a WBA. :131-

:259- for posting a link to those videos. The four parts are about 1hr 40 min long but he covers all of the self diagnostic tests. He also describes the most common points of failure due to dirt, heat, and nicotine, what each of the sensors do and how they read the bills, and how the calibration paper works (uses special IR coating on the white mylar "paper" to adjust the voltage/brightness of the LEDs to a pre-programmed transmissive intensity.)

The last part of the lecture deals with the UBA.

My only caveat is that the camera person has got to be the worst rank amateur idiots I've seen in years. You'll hear everything, but expect to spend time getting dizzy as the camera looks at the floor, ceiling, table, etc., or zooms in to the wrong place and sits there, while all of it remains blissfully out of focus. :279- :125-

It was interesting to hear about how/why the DBV-200 came about.  Basically cheap casinos not wanting to buy new machines even though they reached the end of their 'expected' life.

:89-  and it was interesting to note that they have the same head technology as the WBA.

What I didn't know was that just one of the rectangular LED output sensors provides four readings: IR reflective and transmissive, and visible red reflective and transmissive. He says at that point that the bottoms and tops alternate. The bottoms are on for 50ms, then the tops are on for 70ms. At an earlier point in the video he mentions that the sensors read pieces of the bill in 4ms pulses.

Another interesting note is that two of the magnetic sensors are replaced with optical sensors for all currency other than USD, AUD, and JPY, since they are currently the only bills using magnetic ink, and because other countries use a wider assortment of colors and greater detail to offset the lack of it, thus requiring extra optical sensors.

"JCM WBA Reference Paper Set
[000-501-000032]    $8.88"

But they don't really say what they mean by "set". :103-

Point of info: As I learned tonight in the WBA videos, the DBV200 uses different paper. It has a different amount of the infrared coating on the white Mylar than the one for the WBA, so using the wrong one sets the LED levels incorrectly which leads to more bill rejections, especially $50s and $100s.

Also, one may have to run the paper through the dbv more than one cycle to fully calibrate the head. They said that that was because the LED levels were changed in minute amounts and if they were out of calibration badly enough, one cycle wouldn't bring them back to spec.

Never touch (or clean) the white side of the calibration paper. The black side is plain paper and can be handled.

FWIW, I have bought DBV-200 paper from them (same price) and it's just one sheet.  Shipping is sort of a killer as they only ship UPS for like $12.

Sounds like it's time to give Jim (Blueridge) a call, or one of our other vendors. I'm sure that they can sell members one piece for less and with much lower shipping.

FWIW, I looked around a LOT for some of this paper. I had a WTB in the classified too with no luck.

I do recall patriot taking a while to ship too, but I was just happy to finally find some. And their CS is excellent if not a bit puzzling. As I noted, they shipped it UPS, but they sent it in one of those bubble mailers with no other protection (i.e. they didn't sandwich it between some cardboard or something). So when I got it, the mailer and thus the paper was a bit crinkled. I sent them an e-mail about it, mainly just telling them that they should have packaged it better. They promptly apologized and then sent me a replacement UPS overnight service (no charge to me). Go figure.

The WBA calibration papers...or "Field Calibration" papers, if used right, can bring a WBA back to life with just the calibration process alone. They basically align the optics back to manufacture standard. JCM also sells a hard plastic version of these "papers" that kind of resemble the calibration "cards" for the UBA. UBA's have a better acceptance rate than WBA's, but they can be a pain in the butt to repair. JCM's newest bill validator, the iVizion, has a removable head like the WBA, better acceptance rates than the UBA, and a new technology that takes a picture of the bill or tito inserted. Check the iVizion out....    http://www.jcmglobal.com/en/products/productdetails.aspx?ProdID=iVIZION

OMG is that old.. I didn't realize Randy Fromm posted these to utube. I am the instructor in this video. Looks like one of the Mystic Lake sessions.
Well I'm semi retired now, working in Laughlin, Nv. Any JCM questons you may have I would be glad to help.
