Title: how to polish/clean the gold finish on a Bally 6000 slot?
Post by: BR549 Auto Sales on October 09, 2011, 09:03:04 PM
Is there a type od cleaner or polish that someone could suggest to clean my Bally slot button deck that has the shiny gold finish? I usually use simple green or windex but neither is working very well.

Thanks,

David

Hold on there!!  :81- That stuff would probably take the gold layer right off of the chrome. Are you SURE that Brasso is safe for gold colored doors? :103-

Yes it was, and it's great for chrome, but the fake gold plating used on slots is easily damaged and/or removed. I don't know if Brasso is safe for gold doors or not, but I'd be very cautious about advising anyone to use it on gold trim until someone with experience maintaining gold doors posts an answer.

Maybe Bettor Slots will reply and let us know. :71-

There was a whole topic on this a while back and a lot of comments against using brasso on gold finishes. Damned if I can remember what was recommended though

Everyone has different ways of doing things, so who really knows what is best.  I agree, I would definitely not use the Brasso on the gold finish for a considerable length of time or quantity, especially on the Bally's.  In truth, the best way to clean any chrome, gold or silver, is to use a very soft micro-fiber towel and a lot of elbow grease.  For you youngsters out there, the definition of elbow grease is to polish the chrome with such a force and for such a length of time that you find yourself breathing hard and sweating.

Typically on a surface that has already been polished and you just want to dress it up, what I would do is take a micro-fiber towel and spray a light amount of Windex on it.  Wipe the surface down lightly just to knock down the finger grease stains.  Then flip the towel over to the dry side and polish it well with a dry cloth.

In your case Staz, I know you are near the coast and based on this post and one or two others I have seen recently, I think you are starting to experience some oxidation build-up.  When you start getting a raised flaky and rough surface you are seeing, this is the results of a lot of moisture in the air...salty air is even worse.  You may consider using a dehumidifier in your game room.  At any rate, you should know that the chrome on your Bally was in fact treated initially with Brasso and as you can see it did not harm the finish.  The trick is to apply it lightly and remove quickly.  Set your timer...from the time you apply a light enough amount to remove the oxidation to the time you wipe it off...make it less than 30 seconds.  My feeling is if it is caked on and allowed to sit, of course the deeper into the finish its going to eat it away...so try to not do that.  Finish with a dry micro-fiber towel with some pressure and you will see it shine up as nice as the day you got it.

Keeps the sound coming from just the speaker and not vibrating through the enclosure it's mounted in resulting in a "cleaner" sound. Especially effective at higher volumes.

My plater tells me that the bally gold finish is indeed gold, but maybe he's just guessing.  In any case, the layer is thin and soft and will wear off easier than you think.  A non abrasive cleaner works best.  I wouldn't overdo it either.

Thanks,

Wayne  I maybe talking apples and oranges, but on a couple of PE slant tops ( Gold finish )  I took a pad of very, very course steel wool and removed the clear coat that was above the Gold. The steel wool would not even scratch the Gold finish.

We did remove the Gold finish on a couple of S+ but had to use steel wool and acetone.

Well through the cotton and peanut butter jokes, I figured I would try 0000 extra fine steel wool and the gold on the machine looks factory new now. This is what I also use to clean, shine and polish the outside glass of my machines, works great on the chrome finish as well.

just the steel wool only, no polish or chemical of any type. We used to use it on automobile glass and chrome when I was in the auto paint and body business. Main thing is to use the finest grade you can find, usually 0000 or 00-00-00-00. You can find it at Wal Mart in the paint dept, comes in a bag of rolled up pads of @ 12 or so.

Staz  The simple truth is, if you start putting steel wool to your machines, the next post you start will be asking where to take your door to get it re-plated.

Think !!  What is steel wool ???  Little strips of steel with sharp edges. Now what are those little sharp edges going to do to the finish of your machine ?
They are going to remove a very thin coat of the finish.  First few times the machine will look good, but over a period of time doing this, all the finish will have been removed. I did post here I used steel wool on a old IGT PE slant top, but it was a piece of S*** machine before I started on it and didn't much to lose.

Now what is Brasso? Anyone that spent any time in the Army or Navy know that Brasso and a brass belt buckle go hand and hand. ( Oh the wasted hours )
Brasso has some kind of petroleum base with a very mild abrasive suspended in it. Brasso in it's self doesn't polish anything, it's the elbow grease rubbing it on that make the metal shine by removing a very small layer of material. In the Navy we were forbidden to polish the Copper and Brass air lines in the engine rooms because over the years the lines would become thinner and the possibility of bursting. ( We did anyway )

Staz  I don't think you would use Brasso or steel wool on the hood of your car, why would you think of using either of them on the Gold finish of a slot machine!!

BR549 Auto Sales  Just to clear my mind, if you already knew all about the use of steel wool, why did you start this thread ??  Seems to me if a fellow already knows the ans. to the question he ask, it  must have just been  a test to see if the other folks are as smart as he is.

Players fingers wear the chrome off the play deck next to the Max Bet button. Now I ask you which is more abrasive, a finger or steel wool ??  Try a little experiment for me.
Besides were talking about Gold not Chrome finish

to answer the "why did I ask about how to polish the metal question" when i already had a method of my own, just in case there was a better method out there other than what I have already used in the past, instead I got replies about cotton and peanut butter............ The main reason was because of the gold finish and if another member out there had a specific way of how they polished/cleaned their machines with that finish. Either way the steel wool worked for me and the finish looks like brand new, it isn't like i will continue to polish it to a point to where there is no finish at all, only a complete idiot would attemt such a thing. In the state that the gold finish on my game at this point, all I will have to do in the future is use a glass polishing cloth like the type one would use to clean their hd tv screen, laptop screen, etc. Nevertheless it looks as if it just came from the factory, so i am happy with the steel wool results that i have. Has nothing to do with how smart another member is, we are all here to learn and to share USEFUL information, not belittle members with useless information or make a mockery out of them. Guess I am just a little "old fashioned" when it comes to courtesy.

I went to try the peanut butter, so got it out of the cupboard.  Thought I'd get a drink before I went to it, saw some celery in the fridge, took it out, washed it then filled it with peanut butter.  I took my Jack & Coke on ice and my celery with peanut butter with me, sat down on a slot stool and played the machine until it was time for another drink.  By this time, the celery was gone, tasted great with the peanut butter too.  Took the next drink, sat down and played the machine.  i looked over the machine and damn, the finish looks like new.  Glad I didn't waste the peanut butter.

I don't know what the weather is where you are, but I'm pretty sick of the rain right now.

Yeah, but even at a modest pace of 450 spins an hour, he would have played about 340 spins in 45 minutes. If it was a 1 coin $100 slot, that would equate to about $34,000 washed through the machine. If it was a 2 coin slot, then the amount doubles to $68,000. I'm not saying that he wasn't ahead after 45 minutes, but only that those wins ($15,000) aren't as much as they would seem at first glance when you take into account how much money the person was betting.

To put it into perspective, if it were a 3-coin quarter machine, $0.75 * 340 = $255 washed, and wins of 75, 40, and 35 coins would come to $37.50. From what I remember of Staz's pictures, the values on the wheel remain the same (in terms of coins paid) even though the number of coins played varies and the award glass payouts are multiplied.

On a serious note, by definition, any form of polishing – no matter how benign – involves removing material from the object being polished. I don't know of any polish that can remove scratches by filling them with new material.

the $100 wof only comes in a  1 credit machine........last time i played it and hit 12500 on it, a few weeks back i set a limit if it doesnt hit in 15 spins then you move on back to the $5 wof's :72-........

Did the crunch of the celery drown out the spin music? :128-  :30- :96-
You know what they say: If you drink enough Jack & Coke, an ugly slot that rates a 4 starts to look like a 10. :200- :252- :197-  :94-
I like the spin sound.  The machine was mint before the drink.
