Title: IGT S+ error 41, 42, 43
Post by: slots15301 on October 18, 2011, 12:08:39 AM
I just picked up a IGT S+ (Spin till you win) It would give error 41, 42 or 43 on reset (reels would spin slow). After I reset it about 20 times I could smell something burning. It was the trace going to pin 2 of J8 on the backplane board. I repaired the trace and tried it again. Now the reels spin faster but still getting errors from all 3 reels ( 2 of the assys would give 90% of the errors. even when I swapped reel positions).  Then the same trace burnt again. Also the trace that goes from j10 pin 7 and ran across the top of the board also burnt.

So. do I have a problem on the CPU or do I have 2 bad reel assys?

Post some pictures of the board damage. Also look under and around boards for loose coins that may be shorting out the boards.

I would suspect you have a bad MPU not bad reel assemblys.
The slow moving behavior described is a reel error. Its common when something interferes with a spin.
41 =Reel 1, 42=Reel 2 etc...

The bottom corner of the board has 5 resistors. I would looke for an issue there.
3 of the resistors might be somewhat fried. The other 2 will be pristine.
Replace the 3 fried ones with the same value as the 2 good ones.
The S+ can use 5 reels, this was almost only ever done in Australia. So you only see wear on 3 of the resistors.

I agree with the earlier comment. The fixed motherboard might have a coin or two stuffed under it.

Get another motherboard and throw that one away please - before something else burns up on the main MPU board. Burning traces spread like cancer.
Place an wanted to buy ad in the Classifieds sectionof NLG
and I'm sure someone will have one for ya!

I replaced the the MPU with a brand new one. Still same problem. I only reset it twice but it gave error 41 the first time then 42 the second. I checked the voltages to the motherboard from the P/S and they are all good. Checked for shorts and loose coins and found nothing. Could a corrupt eprom cause these problems? Anyone have the checksums for a SP731 and SS4455?   Bad reels?

10 mHz chips on a 16mHz replacement board will   :186-

MPU replaced and motherboard still burning traces. Sounds like a short somewhere. Make sure the power supply has the right size fuses. The fuses should be blowing before those large traces cook.

I think he just has the reel errors, no more burning traces. Wait to hear back from him, he purchased a 16mHz board and installed the 731 chip in it, I sent him a 16mHz chip. (no I did not sell him the board ! before you ask... :60- :60-)

Ok, I see it was the first MPU that burned up the traces twice. He still should check the fuse values though.

It is now running with the original 16mhz board in it (with correct eproms). It had a SP731 Game Prom in a 16mhz board when I got it. I was told It was working then got the reel error. Now I know that was not true.  All fuses are correct not sure why it burnt the ground traces.

A photo of the 3 fuses laid out next to each other the way you take them out,
starting from top to bottom - will tell us everything... :89-

I'll betcha you have a slo-blow fuse mixed in the 3 somewhere.

Nope alll fast acting. Top was 6A center was 8A bottom was 6A. I work on coin-op equipment everyday. First thing I done was check the fuses when the trace burnt.

So, with the right eprom devices - that was all it was?
The original chips weren't OEM?

My take was the original MPU was bad. Replacment MPU was 16Mhz, but came with 10Mhz SP chip and thus the reel tilts.

Original and replacement MPU were 16Mhz, 731 was wrong all along but did not cause the short. SP1145 got him up and running.

So is the original MPU also good, or is that one causing the traces to burn?

Both MPU's were good (both are 16Mhz). It is running on the original right now and not burning traces. I have no idea what caused the traces to burn.
