I think I finally found a substitute for the 27c4002, 27C4096 used for base, key and clear chips in our S2000.
It will take some creativity and work due to different device packege that SST uses
It is a SST39WF400B

They come in 48-Ball WFBGA, 48-Ball XFLGA, and TFBGA
All 48 pin devices but 8 of the pins are N/C - no connection so it would adapt back to 40pins.
The Question is which device package would be easiest to adapt to the 40 pin DIP socket?

I would not advise doing this. As mounting any for of BGA device  requires special equipment.  BGA devices have to be precisely set.  X-rays and special magnification equipment are also required to mount BGA devices properly.  Also, once you have layed out your  PCB, with the required fiduciaries, you must also have a stencil made for your PCB.  These cost about $250 to $350, but once you have one made you can use it for however many pcbs that you want made and for however many runs of that pcb that you want to do.  I f you are generating you own gerber files, then you need to also make sure and output a pic & place file.  BGA's are not easy to work with and they can't be done accurately by hand.

I did some looking on the SST site this would be a better choice than the first one I listed.

If I remember right there are ways to adapt 48 TSOP to a 40 pin DIP fairly easily.
and I do not plan on laying out a PCB.
I will do point to point with very small wire.
8 pins are NC so that makes things easier.

The GQ-3X and 4X will program it.

That is close but not a perfect match for the S2000, we have to loose 8 pins and no they are not at the end of the chip.

I wonder if they make those so you can make each connection from chip pad to the pin via jumper wires.

This might not be inexpensive
Sockets can be expensive $10 or more only need (1 to 2)
The ADP-42 for the GQ-3X/4X is $49.00

TSOP is a great option and those boards that Brichter found on Ebay are a nice option.  Most likely you could message the guy if you were buying a bunch and probably get them for a little less say $6.00 a pair vs. his $10pr.

How many pins don't match up?

I had thought of a flash option in the past, but never had the time to reseach further..... I had this as an idea...

CH :95-

Some of those adapters have extra circuitry in them which would make them incompatible. I did see some boards without traces that were set up to be hand wired.
