I just read a huge thread from jakekelly937, who had what appeared to be fuse, then optic problems with his recently bought s plus. Three pages later it ended with him taking it in to a shop, as you all probably read. And yes I still want to hear what the outcome was as well!
I know I had blown out an optic part in my hopper on my Money Storm slant top, but I was wondering how do optics work exactly?
I realize it's a light emitter with a receiver. When one part meets another, it created a signal or pulse. But how does the optic create the beam? What frequency is the light? Why are optics used on the door and not just a contact switch? Where are all the optics in a typical s plus? Can someone give me a discourse on optics?

There are 6 set of optics on an S+:

The reel optics. (3 pairs)
The door optics.
The hopper optics.
The Coin-In optics.

There are more in a DBV cash box area to see the cash box seated and to read bills.
The main ones you want to know about are the four I listed above.

I took a hopper optic apart ( that's in another thread somewhere) and posted pictures.
You can bypass any door optics with a simple cherry switch with a little extra wiring.
All of the optics must be free of dust to work correctly as they are transmitting and receiving IR light beams.
You can't see them with the naked eye but you can view the emitter optic photo LED transistor lit up with a video camera.
The main reason why there are door optics is for security
and that it cannot be simply grounded out like a cherry switch.

They are very easy to make if you have the basic soldering skills
and search know how to get the parts.
Heck if know how they work other than the fact that they are IR LED diodes
and must have the polarity positive side attached correctly or they either do not light up or burn out.
Google "IR LED diodes" to find out how they conduct electricity.

All kidding aside (for awhile)...THANK YOU for that information. I'm going to try the camera thing soon as I can just to see that pretty light. I wonder who came out with optics for slots first? IGT I would assume?

Bally E series used optics for the reel readers in early 1980
That's the first time I saw them in a slot machine.

The early  E1000's used incandescent lamps and later switched to IR
