Title: Powering Back-Lit Reels
Post by: mah on March 14, 2012, 04:15:23 PM
Was hoping someone would explain (or direct me to a thread on) how to power back-lit reels when the power supply harness is not equipped with the additional plug.

Searched threads with no success.

As always, any help is appreciated.

Mike

You have the top board or the bottom board there in the back right of the machine just under the reel shelf?
It would on the back wall next to the handle mechanism...>>>

It sounds like he's needing to add a power harness for a machine that doesn't have one Bunker

If your going to TRY to use lighted reels FIRST the game has to support it .  then you will need as follows . lighted reels  . control board .  Reel harness and I/O and controller power harness. NOTE #### the controller board is different on a 5 reel and a 3 reel  as is the harness as it was not specified as to what you have  .I  do not know about 4 reel machines as i do not have one . Other than a 3 reel with bonus reel AS in (SIZZLING SEVENS SUPER SPIN )  ALSO Controller may have a metal cover over it or not

MAH, if you haven't already looked there, the power harness for the backlight control board is usually tied up and buried right at reel shelf level on the back wall of the cabinet. Generally just above and a little left of where it plugs into the backlight control board. I guess some vision ready cabinets didn't have it, but I think it was FORDSBS or Foster who posted a workaround for that. When I can get to an actual computer I'll try and find it for you

Click on the topic below. Reply 4 or 5 from Foster talks about adding that plug. Or at least tells what power you'll need and what pins on the plug it has to go to

Exactly, trying to power back lit reel with no harness present.  There is not one tucked away where it usually is.

Oh okay!
I thought there was a difference between the header connections for two reel driver boards for the power -
but they look the same actually.
So, all's is good there...
I'm glad you found the power harness.
Looks pretty simple really...someone had an extra one for you?
Also, Foster seems to point out that he didn't like all that extra juice running through the motherboard/backplane traces.
From what unit will you you be getting the power from?
The power supply box or the motherboard header?

Well, where and how I power it will depend on whether I can find the correct plug ends to make a harness to plug into the motherboard.

I will definetly need to find the correct plug for the controller.  As far as the other end, my first thought if I don't have the correct motherboard plug is to tap into each individual wire using a "splice connector" available at radio shack.  You do not have to cut the wires.  The wire your tapping into runs completely through the little plastic device.  You place the end of the second wire half-way into the device and close the lid.  You then crimp the metal tab sticking out one end and it cuts through the wire insulation of each wire to make a connection.  Very clean splice.  This concept is used on low voltage outdoor lighting to tap into the power cord.

I'll just have to read the instructions carefully so I don't cross wires.

If anyone has a harness to plug into the motherboard already made up as pictured in the link provided, I would be interested.

I hope to get to this project soon.

Thanks,

mah

That's the one!

Anyone have one?  Back-lit Fox and Hound depending on it.  :3-
