Title: CF card sector size
Post by: squirrel on April 11, 2012, 05:11:34 AM
Does anyone know the correct sector size for a 1GB CF card for WMS games?  Also how many KB should the file be?  Driving me crazy recently.  Thanks in advance

I have to look it up for you - but you may be able to find it out through google quicker  -  the standard WMS BB1 game uses a Sandisk 256Mb card.   Each CF manufacture has a different number of sectors and sector size known as a drive geometry.    If you purchase a sandisk cf card from eBay or someplace else it must be genuine.   China fakes have a different geometry.

When the BB boots up the OS checks each CF card to make sure they are "genuine" through the geometry.       I have successfully changed the geometry in Linux, (haven't found a winblows equivalent), of these china fakes to make the BB boot -  HOWEVER  -  the read/write time of these fakes are much slower from the real thing.   Although I was able to get the game to boot and play - it made the machine crash frequently.

my advice - DON'T DO IT.

The correct geometry for a 256 cf card is 995/8/63 [501760 sectors]
