Title: How to make Glass?
Post by: jdkmunch on February 01, 2009, 12:22:26 AM
I have read in several threads that some folks made their own glass belly and top inserts.   How exactly is that done?   I was thinking of printing the image on clear paper and then transfering that to a sheet of glass cut to size.

I am curious about how others have done this?

Thanks!

I was helping a guy clear out his warehouse full of slot stuff. He had many glass kits that I did not recognize. He said he made them up years ago.
He had a large format printer and printed on sticky sided paper. (must have thrown out half a dozen rolls when I was clearing out the warehouse) He would then apply it to the back of 1/8" glass and then sandwich it between another layer  of 1/8" glass. Wrap the edges in clear tape to hold it all together.
They looked OK but it must have been a lot of work.
I remember someone on the old site complaining about a glass kit that they bought off of fleabay where they got this type of stuff.
It will work in a pinch but it's not like original glass.

They claim the stuff express does is good and close to orginal.  I, however prefer the ORIGINAL and authenic stuff to keep the game rite and worth it's value.   It is a pain in the *** to find the stuff orginal but if it is extremly rare then that is the route to go (aftermarket/fake/repro).  Just my 2-cents.  B.

You mean A bomb that will remove bikinis. If so, where can I get one.
I remember a really old movie with Walter Mathow called "The  Nude Bomb." Pretty funny.

According to IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081249/) it was Don Adams (as Maxwell Smart), AND they have it online (http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi3952018201) for (almost) free (you have to pay the price of watching commercials :96-)

My Haywire Deluxe kit in my S+ came from Express.  The reel strips were not as good as the real deal, but the glass is AWESOME -- I'm very, VERY pleased with the glass that they made.

Thanks

Thanks! I have a large format printer so I think I'll give the clear paper sandwiched between two pieces of glass a try.  The hardest part is getting a clean high resolution image without a reflection.

Has anyone tried Kinko's?

They have this:
Choose from a variety of materials including photo paper, canvas, watercolor paper, mesh, adhesive floor vinyl and backlit film.

I wonder what the backlit film is.  :103-

Epson also makes a transparency film for their large format inkjet printers, but actually, you would need a milky white adhesive plastic, because inkjets can't print white. You would then need to cut out any area that needed to be clear, such as the spot for a progressive award. To print white you would probably need a dye sublimation printer.

Could you not just use white glass (like was suggested for toppers) and then use the sticky film and a Inkjet.

I never heard of white glass. It sound like it would work great!

Its simply tinted but white.

The one issue I could see would be that if you put the sticky print behind the glass, as is usually done (requires printing the image flipped on the Y axis), then everything printed would have a white milky appearance. If you put the sticky print on the front of the glass, then it will deteriorate or get damaged more quickly.

Or you could stick it to the front of a 1/4" piece of milky glass and put a 1/4" piece of clear glass in front of it, but then we're back to the sandwich issue again.

I don't mind the sandwich.  I think it would look perfect.
I think there is enough room for a bead of liquid nails around the edge.

Again my issue is getting the image.  I have been working with one on photoshop now for a few days.

That's pretty awesome munch!
When you get a chance when finished, could you post up a few close ups of it?
I, for one, would really like to see how it comes out!
My goal is to try and make the topper inserts for different S+ themes.

Absolutely

I printed out the image on a 13X19 sheet of paper and it really looks good.   I am going to keep working on it and then go to Kinkos and print it out on the film.

Agreed, the brown used for the double bar nudge symbol is very much noticeably lighter than the non-nudge double bar symbol. Plus the first set I got had some sort of adhesive on it.

But in their defense, I called them about it and they overnighted another set, so I'd have no problem using them again.

you know... My haywire deluxe has the same thing! The double bar is a bit different color than the double bar nudge. I wonder if it a repo?

I recently designed custom glass/reels for my Haywire Deluxe and Coral Reef chips which had no strips or glass with them.  I named the Coral Reef game "Bonkers" after my cat and the Haywire Deluxe game "Short Circuit" for the heck of it (didn't know WMS had a game of the same name).  There aren't for sale as I only made one copy and they are for my personal use but I thought I'd show how they came out.

See them here: http://usera.imagecave.com/JRR4/SlotPics/

You'll notice I used dark colors for the reel strip backgrounds.  I like that look better than the white.  JR

I designed them with PowerPoint and a friend had them printed for me thru Express as a gift.  Nice thing for him to do for me, huh?

I've also used a local printer.  I had him print the reel strips on photo paper and the glass graphics on opaque plastic with his printer set to put out the most ink possible.  I then sandwiched the plastic between 2 1/8 pieces of glass.  The Express work is superior though.

$100
$500?

Mine had the same thing as well -- I recall there was some discussion about it on the old site, but I don't remember if anyone ever figured out exactly why it was that way.  I was fortunate enough to eventually come across a set of IGT reel strips for the game (the bars are the same color, nudge or not), so I'm happy.

I'm glad it doesn't bother me.... I have a touch of OCD and things not in line or different colors can freak me out.   For me I only consider getting the hit when I get all the symbols the same.  So I am not happy unless I get 3 double bars with the lightning symbol or 3 without the symbol -  mix and match causes me to take a drink.

That happens to me from time to time as well; things that don't line up perfectly bother me. I have Tourette's, and it is part of the family of OCD disorders.

I checked my original Haywire Deluxe strips, and the double bars are actually orange, although there is a slight hint of brown in the orange. All of them, nudge or not, are the same color and match the original glass, but don't exactly match the reproduction glass from EI. (I bought a 9" 3cm repro top to extend my original 2cm RT)

Speaking of slot glass.
Here's an interesting link if you want to see what all of IGT's decal inserts look like.

One of these days I'll find an original IGT reel strip set, the ones from EI are close enough for now.

StatFreak I have Tourette's, too, but it only manifests itself when I hurt myself bad, like missing the head of  the nail and hitting one of my fingers with a hammer.  :118- :96-

Thankfully, I've never had coprolalia. Maybe I shouldn't have disclosed that. Now I won't be able to get away with swearing at the BBQ bashes! :97-  The tics were awful until about the age of 26-28. Since then they've come and gone but have been mild enough that most people don't notice.

I have to say - I looked at both the Haywire Deluxe reels and glass and the glass is EXACTLY  the same as the reels - the double bar with lightning is slightly lighter than the plain double bar.

Is the glass repro too? My original glass has the same orange (with hint of brown) color for all double symbols, glass and strips.

PS: Have you tried covering the lightning bolt and comparing the visible portion of the double bar colors side by side. The color of the bolt might be fooling your eye.

I don't know if the kit is a repo or not -  It is stunning either way

I did cover up the bolt to see if was throwing off my eye but it isn't -   both the glass and the strips match - the lightning bolt is slightly lighter  :144-
