Title: Bally 5500 Blazing & problem
Post by: bigslope on June 04, 2012, 05:14:33 PM
Hi Guys, My 5500 battery went low (No surprise). I soldered a new one in and put the board in the machine with Jumper 10 covered to do a ram clear.
The machine powered up but nothing in the display area. No Error codes or anything. It would not ram clear.
I took jumper 10 off and tried to fire the machine up but again lights come on but nobodies home.

It rejects all coins etc. I did however notice the red reset light flashes slowly, about once every 3 seconds or so.

Anyone any ideas?

It was working fine prior to the low battery and I know how to reset it as I have done it quite a few times now.

Try the reset again

SafeRAM™ Clear Procedure
For a Complete, Full, or Partial SafeRAM™ Clear,
turn the machine power OFF. Unlock and remove the MPU
Assembly. Put jumper J10 in clear position.
Upon ensuring that the MPU Assembly is firmly seated
into the Backplane Board, turn the machine power ON
while depressing the appropriate buttons.

Complete - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons, then switch power ON. When the message
CH C displays in WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN and
TEST buttons. The CH C message is followed by CL C.

Full - Press and hold the PSEUDO COIN button, then
switch power ON. When the message CH F appears in
WIN PAID, release the PSEUDO COIN button. The CH F
message is followed by CL F.

Thanks for the reply but no joy

I did both procedures but still just the flashing reset light.

I did try the board from my other Bally 5500 and it worked.

Hope I have not ruined a CPU board  :37-

Is there any acid leakage on the board?
You can try gently removing the chips and reinserting them.

No acid damage on the board. Will take a good look at it later and try another battery to see what happens.

from experience, any 5500 with program chips (u-12/u-15) dated later than 1996, you need clear chips to do a ram clear.
find specific ram clear chips or install earlier program chips, to do manual jump ram clear.

Mine has the old mains and i have cleared it several times with jumper 10.

usually first thing i do on a troublesome pro 5500 is swap the four mains.
just for S & G,
have you checked the power supply to make sure its putting out 5, 12, -12,  loaded volts.

The power supply I assume is fine as when i swap the board with another one the machine works just fine

Check your battery and make sure it is in contact with the board. Some times when you solder it is possible to move the wire where it meets the board and no contact

some bally boards have a jumper to preserve the battery. is the jumper in place, missing or in the off position?

did you check the battery with a meter -just because something is new doesn't mean its good.

when in doubt -follow the tracers and check for correct voltage down the board.

:131-My 5500 Blazing RESET light stays lighted.  Can anyone help me?  How do it get it to reset and stay dark?  Some brief history.  I am new to this...... I had a code 81, so I had the battery replaced...... then I got the code 83...... which meant I needed to do a ram clear...... so, I bought those 5500 clear chips for UL12 and UL15 and followed the complete clear procedure from the manual (pg. 2-11).  I never got the CH C or CL C message in the win window and my reset button stays lighted.  I turned the power off, pressed the reset button once I powered up again and nothing.  Also, tried holding the reset button and then powering up and still nothing.

I need help, please!!

program chips later than 1996 need to be matched with their clear chips.  or replace program chips (u-3,u-4, u-12, u-15) with earlier chips and do a manual reset by jumping j-10.
