This Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karma) can better describe what Karma is than I can.  In a nutshell, if you help someone else you earn good karma in your real life, and it's good practice for others to increase your karma counter on the site for good deeds that you do.

Captain Happy  :95- used to go through threads and randomly award a "Karma Storm  :50- :50-" where he'd "rain" good karma on everyone in a thread, typically as a thanks for positive participation or whatever.

A month or two ago the "karma" title was changed to "likes", but more than one person here didn't like the "likes" title and requested it be changed back to "karma".  Joey changed the title to read "karma storms" which, in my un-official opinion, is a little bit mis-titled and should just be called "karma".  A "karma storm" was where someone would go through a thread and award good karma to everyone who participated in the thread, as previously mentioned.

You'll see people in a thread saying something like, "K+ to you" meaning that they gave positive karma to someone in the thread for their positive contribution.  While there's no particular value to the specific karma number a person has, if someone has a lot of positive karma, that generally means that they've been a helpful, positive member of the site.

I hope that helps, and I'll give you a K+, too, for asking a question that likely other members might have had, too.  :89-
