2- swapped out wire harness that goes in bl controller from io board same issue no backlites.......

okay my next idea is a bad connection from the harness....... now theres 3 plugs in the backlite controller....... the one on the side plugs into the io, i put that one in my top dollar and it worked fine so that isnt the problem........ has to be the other 2 plugs...... the 4 pin plug where does that go from backlite controller? also the other plug whats it do that plugs nevt to it?
i will pick up some deox tomm...... and try spraying the plugs if that doesnt work ill get a new harness..........

If the reel lights work doing the reel light test, then you might be having a base chip issue or the base chip does not support back lighting.

The 4 pin is actually a 6 pin, it is power and comes from the PS behind the reels

The other connector is the reel harness, 3 reel has 5 connectors the other end connects to motherboard

swapped io cards no change no backlites........why would the base chip all of a sudden not support backlites?? i had backlites over 2 years now on this machine......other people on here have the same software with backlites......could it just be a bad harness? but if the harness was bad why do the lights work in test mode?.......... very weird!!

just swapped mpu still no lights.......

Did you swap chips when you swapped MPUs? Try it with a different SB chip (any game with backlits).

Staz, it sure appears to be an SB chip problem and you could sure try a differant chip, but in your case the most prudent thing to do would be to get a new matching chip to try it. With the games you have you can't just throw any SB in there for a test without swapping top box bonus games also. If you have a standard game SB you can try ot as long as you unplug the top box bonus game from the motherboard otherwise you'll get netplex errors that won't allow the game to start

If unplugging and plugging the origional board back in worked I gotta ask, do you ever turn your machine other than for service stuff?

The same reason why I can make the VFD go blank with a Munsters SIMM in my Double Diamond Deluxe kit, but bring it back to life ONLY if I feed it a DSV00042 again.  It's firmware voodoo I tell ya!

I'm wondering if maybe you have a trace or solder connection that goes bad on that board after it gets warm enough.  Do you have the door optics bypassed on that machine?
