Title: EARTHQUAKE!! Keep putting this off...
Post by: shortrackskater on August 22, 2012, 06:33:10 AM
I live in Southern California. I have ten full size slot machines. Seven in one room, three in the garage. Some are bolted to the stands and I just got bolts for the rest which I'm doing soon. BUT...what difference is it going to make if we have a moderate to severe earthquake? The machine and stand may come crashing down.
I know if it's massive I can kiss them goodbye but has anyone in this area come up with a good idea to hold them down? I thought of wrapping a strap around the "head" of each one but that just looks weird. Should I bolt a piece of wood in the back of each machine and screw it into a stud? That was one thought but I'd love to see if anyone has an idea or has already done something. If so, I'd like to see some pictures. I keep putting this off and tonight I got one of those premonitions again. We had a small one last week and I sat here waiting and to possible hurl my body against my s2000 so save it's life! Thankfully, it was just a 4.1, with the epicenter about 20 miles from me.
However, I'm literally about an eighth of a mile off the top of the Newport/Inglewood fault line!  :hide1-

Yes, I moved from CA to TX where earthquakes and slot machine laws are non-existent.  :96-

But seriously, while I did not have any slots in CA :58-, I did have large items strapped to wall studs.

How about something like they strap hot water heaters with? Or at least along those lines? Like a steel/metal band of some sort...or if you have or have access to a concrete drills (Hilti?) then maybe you could bolt the stands to the floor, with the machines bolted to the stands? Dunno, just trying to think outside the box... :103-

Yeah, that's the stuff I used when I was in CA. It's flexible enough to fit most places.

I live in So Cal and have no slots either.  :60-   But if I did, I have used this exact strapping system for a display case that is similar in weight and about 8 feet tall.  The nice thing being it has very good velcro to attach to the top of the slot (so no holes in the slot) and then the other side you drill into a stud.  Here is a stock pic how they come (and where) and also a pic of my setup.  So far so good but I pray for no quakes!!

Good golly you people live in southern Calif. and your worried about a little ol earth quake upsetting your toys !!  :103- :103- If it shakes hard enough to turn over a slot bolted to a stand, I hate to tell you this but your gonna have more problems than a piece of broken reel glass, like no water, food electricity, or NLG. " Holly S**t my  moved 4 feet North !! "  ( You know the County is going to site you for moving your house without a permit )

OK I'm going to solve your problem for you, I'm supprised you didn't think of it. GET SLANT TOPS they are already on the floor.

Hey Ros, no BS it's called plumbers tape. Metal strap about a inch wide and a 1/4 inch hole about every inch

My back is still hurting after loading my one and ONLY slant top in a truck, with help. Then the damn lower door nearly broke my toe when I unlocked it, thinking it would hinge down!  :8-
Yes the BIG one will come, destroy and topple everything EXCEPT my slant top!

Well...this is kind of a first....slot owners living on earthquake platonic shelf fault lines!!!  :72-
OMG!

That's nuts... :138- :301- MOVE man!!!!   :25- :30-

Bunker  You don't have to move, just do like I do, roll over and go back to sleep.

OMG!

If you look at the lower "path" (bottom of the picture) right between Huntington Beach and Newport Beach...I'm dead center between them and right in the MIDDLE of that path.   :hide1-

I just re-read my earlier post and noticed that I've confused crustal earth shelves with "platonic"
( I was thinking more in the lines of geological "plateaus" I guess")

- which probably has to do a lot more with sex  rather...  :25-  than with shifting geology cracks...  :97-

One a side note:
Of course, it could very well possible that you're living on top of the burial grounds of some crusty, old crack whore?   :262-

I should have noticed! Plutonic ROCKS are volcanic I think.   I live on a boundary of two tectonic plates (Pacific and North America plates) which are transforming or "grinding" past each other! If I stay here long enough, I think I'll end up where Seattle is in a few million years.
I'll try not to "crack" any jokes here about whores!  :72-

Ok, so your creepy earthquake premonitions were a couple days early...there was a little shaker down in SoCal last night, only a 3.2 or so, but still qualifies. Too bad there wasn't such a thing as an Earthquake Forecaster!! :299-  Heck, just look at the weather forecasters, they are hardly ever, if ever, right! If you could predict earthquakes within 48 hours, you'd be rockin it (no pun intended)!!!

Just put them against the walls that face perpendicular parallel to the fault.  :89-

That way, if they do fall over, it will be the least of your worries... :200- :96- :97-

OHHHHHH!!! So, they just fall in??? Hmmm that's a thought!  :72-

Oops, I got that wrong.  :25- :125- :283- :190-

If they're on the walls parallel to the fault, nothing will happen to them unless it's strong enough that your house ain't surviving anyway!  :208-

If you put them along a wall perpendicular to the fault, the wall will smack them and knock them over even if it's not that strong a quake.

After the Loma Prieta quake in 89, all the stuff on the north and south walls of our house were dumped on the floor, including all the food that came out of the cabinets on those walls in the kitchen. What a freaking mess, applesauce, coffee, mayo, and about everything else you could imagine was all over the floor, it looked like a bomb went off in those cabinets.  :30-  :hide1- :hide4- :hide3- :hide2-

Everything on the east & west walls was fine, including all the dishes and glasses in the kitchen cabinets. The worst thing I had to fix on an east or west wall was to straighten the clock and pictures hanging on them.  :5-

Thanks for all the ideas everyone...even the funny ones. I will look into some kind of "strapping" I think. Another problem is that there's not enough wall space in my "casino" but maybe I can bundle some machines together!

Don't forget to put outriggers on the stands !!

Bolt your stands back to back, it'll make them a bit more stable. Heck, you got a casino going there anyway.
BTW, if you hear of a volcano going off in the Carribean, get the heck out of SoCal and up to higher ground....

Well bolting the stands together is kind of like "outrigging" them in a way. I could re-configure my room and that might work to keep my slots from being "too loose." Get it?  :72-
I have 7 in the room now and really want to squish my other D.D. in there, the formerly "latex" one!
My biggest concern is my Top Dollar. It's very tall and I think I may be strapping it against the wall first.

Hey, Brawley's had over 100 earthquakes in the last 4 hours.  You might want to think about bolting those machines together...fairly soon.
Not that far from you, is it?

5.5 being the biggest so far according to USGS.  http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/ (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/)

I live 1 mile from the San Andreas fault and only about 70 miles north of Brawley.  I am with Brichter though, if these machines come over, that may be the least of my problems.   I am not sure the house will still be standing anyway and we may have ocean front (or in the ocean) property.    :104-

Buzz you have a couple of extra boats there dont you?  Maybe I should put one in my back yard!

You guys take care, and if it gets too creepy, get to high ground. Take care. XOXOXO.

Just felt ANOTHER one a few hours ago. These are "earthquake swarms" and they're all occurring in the Yorba Linda area, not on "my" fault but definitely felt the rolling motion today. It's sort of like being on a boat but the ground is the "water."  :40-

I think I will take these little shakers any day over having water up to my roof!  I really feel for all the people in Lousiana that have lost everything, some of them again!
