Hi guys,  I have some slot questions. If anyone feels like helping me with answers it is very much appreciated. They may seem simple to you but they are not for me so your knowledge and patience is really appreciated.
 Obviously I am new to the whole slot thing.  I'm trying to stick to the s2000 platform just to keep things to one semi-modern platform.
Here are my questions.
  Can a s2000 quarter game generaly be converted to  nickels with simple changes like the right comparitor and probably changing an internal system setting? or does it involve changing out a chip or something more complex.
   My ultimate goal here is to take a 5 line  quarter machine, like a double diamond and convert it to a coin in/coin out nickel game.

Next I guess I would ask all the same of the above, but with Pennies? are there settings in the machine software to do something as small as pennies?

Any more when walking through a casino, all I see for Nickel and Pennies is the digital versions of games. and most times its got a minimum of like 20 lines. So a "penny game" is really like a "20 cent game".   If you want a traditional 3 reel machines you are looking at quarters or dollars as a minimum.
 
  I guess what I am saying is that I want to build one of the old traditional machines like a Triple Diamond or something but with Nickels or pennys and want to know if its possible. or if its possible but so complex with additional parts and chips that its really not worth it.

An S2000 can be converted to a different coin denom fairly simply. Let's say it was a quarter game (with coin in/coin out equipment) and you wanted it to be a nickel game. You would basically change the coin in the comparitor, swap out the shelf wheel in the hopper for one that would accommodate nickels, and change the settings in the machine to tell it's a nickel game now (so it knows how many credits to give for each dollar bill), change the decal on the reel glass, voila!! Nickel game!

Now, of course, if your machine is not set up for coins at all (bills in, tickets out), you will to install a comparitor, coin head (slot you drop the coin in), and a hopper.

Pennies and dimes are a little tougher, since the hopper shelf wheels are not common, if at all even made, for a S2000, but there could be a fix there if one got a little creative. The coins are so lightweight (especially dimes), they can cause problems. That has been an issue since the early days of EM machines even...


Casino penny machines are not set for coin in because the casino does not want the customers spending countless minutes feeding pennies into a machine to play max bet of 90, 180, or 360 credits! Nor do the casinos want to deal with all of those pennies! I did hear of some games that came out of Vegas recently that we're set-up for pennies, with all the coin equipment. To be politely, the games did not attract the highest class of customers, as many down and out street people would come in and play 1 penny at a time to get a cup of coffee or a drink.  Needless to say, it was from one of the lower end casinos...

 Yeah I can guess that the casinos dont want to deal with actual coin in/out pennies. Thats just a mess.  But as far as TITO I dont see why they dont let you play off the odd pennies. They have games with 20 lines one cent each and you are forced to bet 20 lines. If you end up with 19 cents or less on a ticket you are just screwed. or you can collect those tickets and feed them all into another machine I guess. But I am getting off topic.

   So there Are already settings in the standard machine software to do Nickels?  I wont need like a new SB, or Sxx or VXX chip or what ever chip?  I simply get into the machine settings and say one credit equals 5 cents?  I will learn more as I aquire a spare machine to learn on. As it is I have one "completely restored" machine on the way, but I am looking for a project machine, and I wanted to do this nickel thing.

Ed if you want your machine to IGT/casino standards Ros is 100% correct, you need to change the shelf wheel. If you use my standards replace the quarter in the comparitor with a nickel, replace the quarters in the hopper with nickels and give it a try. What is the worst thing that can happen, on hopper pay out it doesn't count a coin and you get a error. Then clear the error and switch back to quarters no big deal. Did you ever compare a quarter to a nickel ? Their damn near the same size, nickel is thicker.

If the nickels work you will need a clear/key chip the change the BV so it will give you 20 credits for a dollar and not 4. Sooner are later your going to need a clear/key chip anyway.

If you have a slant top, forget all the above. You must replace the hopper

And here come the first moment where you probably just look at my post, close your eyes and shake your head.  :60- 
  What is a clear/key chip?   What is the BV?

Buzz is right on about using the quarter hopper with nickels, but I didn't even want to open that cans of worms...same with the Key chip... :133- :133-

   That probably would have been my next question. Ha ha.  So thanks for clearing that up. Key 31, I will keep that in mind.

I know with my S-Plus Fourth of July machine I just swapped the quarter for a nickel in the compariter then reset the machine with clear/key for a nickel and it works fine.

With my S2000 Crystal Sevens 3 credit machine dollar in / ticket out I just reset the machine for 2 cents per credit, max bet 3 credits = 6 cents and have a ball.

Thanks Curt. Reading your post does bring up one more question.
  So is a "Clear Key 31" chip all I am after here?  Or do I need to look for a specific one? Say..... like...... a "Double Diamond Key 31" chip or a "Crystal 7's Key 31 chip". Is that chip completely independent of the game on the machine? 

A key 31 will work in the majority of S 2000 including your Triple Diamond. Key 31 is not only a key chip it is also a clear chip. When you get into vision, reel touch, and some special games like WOF it may not work, I don't know for sure. I've never owned a Wheel of Fortue ( nor do I want to ) or a Reel Touch, have never had a need to key the Vision I have.

Perfect then!! Because like you, I dont want that other stuff. Just the basic s2000 themes are what I enjoy.  Triple Diamond, Double diamond, Hot Peppers, etc....
