Title: Exploding EPROMs Post by: jdkmunch on February 17, 2009, 05:58:31 PM I just got my GQ-4X programmer and have a few questions.
I read that reading a 5500/6000 personality chip the wrong way can damage it. Is there anything I need to know before trying to read these chips? I would like to make backups. EPROMs generally have their power and ground pins on opposite corners. This means that if you insert them backwards you are applying voltage backwards. This is what damages the chip. Ideally putting power on the top 2 pins would make the most sense, along with adding a dud set of pins to the other end. That way if you put them in backwards you would not be able to do damage. I know that this would change the way burners are built, take up extra space, erode sales of chips etc etc. Comments ? Or they could just put a notch on one end of the chip and assume anyone who was handling the chip was not a dumbass and knew what they were doing ..... oh wait... :30- Title: Re: Exploding EPROMs Post by: jdkmunch on February 17, 2009, 06:32:14 PM That notch thing would be a great idea

Dan (tacman) Title: Re: Exploding EPROMs Post by: a69mopar on February 17, 2009, 08:09:28 PM I try to notice the notch but every now and then I screw up and put them backwards (when reading). My programmer shuts it's power down when I do this and I have to unplug the power and plug it in again for it to reset. So far I haven't exploded any.
Thanks, Wayne Title: Re: Exploding EPROMs Post by: Slotmaster on February 17, 2009, 09:38:07 PM I have yet to cook an eprom in a programmer but have for sure in a MPU when backwards.
Just gets really hot with no explosion. Title: Re: Exploding EPROMs Post by: a69mopar on February 17, 2009, 11:23:14 PM On a Bally s6000 putting the mains in backwards can alter the chip so it wont work, the eprom is still good, just the programming changes. Always keep a backup.

Title: Re: Exploding EPROMs Post by: KirkLasVegas on February 18, 2009, 12:45:10 AM It's really simple....
*TAKE A PICTURE* of the entire board before you pull anything off of it.I can't tell you how many times this has saved my butt in the past. A silver "Sharpie" is good for placing a dot by the notch in the chip and on the PCB. Usually all chips will face the same direction on a PCB, but not always! Some PCB's will have an outline on the board, others will have a #1 on the printed side. Others will have a square pad by pin one and round pads everywhere else. Programmers.... ALWAYS...ALWAYS! set the switches before you drop a chip in the ZIF socket! Double check it. Nothing will piss you off more than to kill a chip you want to Read/Copy.Trust me on this one..it will spoil your day! Hope this helps! Kirk in Las Vegas |
