Title: Has anybody ever used a PC Power supply for a 36x/55x video cabinet? Post by: rickhunter on February 24, 2009, 02:13:35 PM I'm going to return to my mini-550 project and not having to use that HUGE 18Volt Transformer would sure go a long way to making the overall design smaller. To this day I don't know what the 18volt transformer powers.

The button lights and thats it. All that weight and size just to power 12 lights or so, but they would have had to add the voltage with another switching power supply so I guess they went with their original deisgn which dates back to their pinball years. I posted a power supply on here in another thread, I have to go find it but it will alllow for 18V to be supplied. You can go as low as 12V but that will dimm the lights abit, but I am not sure if that would be a problem for LED lights. WMS got rid of that bulky transformer so it's long gone on their next geneartion stuff thank god, but they added in a 24V standalone power supply to make up for it. I'm thinking since it's only going to play legacy games, I believe all legacy games have the touchscreen max bet button. So that gets rid of the big block engine. With the added fact that I no longer have to use noise busters for the counters, that's two less things to worry about.

He did not say it but he is using a 12V LCD which will still allow for him to use a PC power supply rather then the stock PS / Transfomer etc. All power does pass the Transformer so you can't just remove it if you are going to keep main power supply by design. Since I have like 4 of them that have been retired as my cases have been upgraded to newer technology.
