Title: Battery modification Post by: fiero1988gt on January 10, 2013, 08:05:31 PM My Bally 6000 machine had an 8100 error code which means low battery. As everyone knows this causes the machine to require a new battery and then clear chips and a lot of fooling around to get back to square one from when the machine was working. The battery fails quickly because as a personal owner of the machine I have it on a power bar and shut the power bar off when not in use. The Casino never shuts the machine off because a machine which is turned off never makes any money.
To over come loosing power from the battery and having to do a clear ram I have mounted two batteries in parallel external to the mpu board. I removed the original lithium battery from the board and run an positive and negative wire external to the board to two double A single battery holders. I wired these two battery holders to the positive and negative wire in paralled and installed a new lithium battery into each of the holders. Now I can periodically check the voltage and when it starts to get low I chan change one battery at a time without loosing the memory. This will be worth my time and effort. The reason I said almost is as I recall they used (3) 1 1/2 volt battery's and a resistor, Again as I recall if you change the battery with the machine turned on NO settings are lost. This was/is Stat Freaks pride and joy on his Bally's.

I made some minor changes and I think I will leave just 1 battery in and change it out when it gets low.

I also appreciate the info from Buzz. I never thought about being able to change the battery while the machine is powered up. Because of that reason we only realy need one battery in one holder if we make sure to change the battery while the machine is powered up. I like the idea of only one battery rather than the three batteries and the diode. Less chance of making a mistake and the batteries are cheap on e-bay. I was able to pick up ten batteries for the price of $15 no tax and no shipping. They came from Isreal which is where they are manufactured. They arrived at my house in Canada within six days. I have now ordered the safe clear chips and after they arrive I hope to have my machine up and running again. I appreciate all the help and excellent info on this board.

Title: Re: Battery modification Post by: Wallgames on February 21, 2013, 10:16:04 PM One of the modifications I routinely make to Bally pinball MPU boards (e.g., AS-2518-17) is to replace the battery with a 5.5v 1.5F capacitor. This retains the memory nicely, without the corrosion problems batteries introduce.
