Title: Modify Haywire Music?
Post by: jdkmunch on March 06, 2009, 10:30:39 PM
I have a regular S+ machine with a Haywire Deluxe theme.   I would like to modify the "Haywire" music when the machine goes haywire.  Does anyone know what I could measure off the board to trigger my special sound effects?

I've done this mod by replacing the bell  - -  but my music only plays when I hit a jackpot.

The only realistic way is to monitor the sound chip either on the MPU or the speaker output.
its the chip that is next to dip switches. If you do monitor the sound chip use a optical isolator

I could capture the output from the chip to trigger my sound effects.

You can turn on the bell to play on all pays.

Yes but I would like to play special music when the machine haywires.

you could replace the bell with a relay. then when the relay pulls
in it closes a switch which triggers a new sound board and
plays your music.

JDK,
I think what you want to do is play different kind of music when the game goes into it's "Haywire" mode.
There really isn't a way to make your soundbox go off only when it "Haywires" though.
Because the machine doesn't really do anything really special (for example, bell going off or candle lights flashing) except re-spin the reels and play "Haywire" sounds - what you want the machine to do can only be done be adding a program to the machine's game chip. We really don't know how that can be done at this time.
Foster's route of monitoring the sound chip with an optical isolater, when it "Haywire's",  is about the best way to go.
But after that, I really don't know... :5-

Maybe Foster has some ideas?

I was thinking along the same lines. The sound is the only distinct signature that you could use to trigger your own device. I would re-route the machine's sound output through the device that you build and then to the S+ speaker. That way, you could passively allow the other machine sounds through to the speaker, and interrupt the signal and replace it with your own when your software detected the haywire sounds.

You want to look for the analog waveform that is being sent to the speaker when the machine haywires. You might take a sample and use it to compare to the machine's sound outputs. If you write such a program, be sure to include a way to adjust the sensitivity of your comparison and to filter out noise, if necessary.

What I am thinking is The CPU signals the Sound chip to play a certain tone, you would have your design act on it.
I have not dived into exactly how the sound chip is controlled yet. but you might be able to have some simple logic determine if it is the haywire tones, coin in(coin in tones occur also on bet one, bet max) or adding credits.

With today's technology all that can be "easily" done with only one micro-controller... I would suggest any of the mid-range Pic micro-controllers (Pic 18 or 24) as they are able to handle analog inputs, they have built in A->D converters and you can write a program to perform the tasks described by David.

Note that i said "easily" because yesterday you needed lots of chips, passive components and semiconductors placed over a PCB to perform that.  Today only one chip can do it, but it does not mean that it will be easy.

Check this site and get in touch with PIC if you haven't yet  http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=2551

Good luck with your project!

SAT, Good info on that chip! It's amazing how far technology has come, even for the home tinkerer.

btw, you only have 111 posts to go to have THE NUMBER OF THE SLOT!  :94-  :97- :97-

Indeed, 777 would be the number of the slot  :96-

It sounds like a pretty cool idea.  I would love to try and build a controller to do this.

I think you caught something that wasn't there. It wasn't a correction, just agreeing.  Nice how the gif goes to 777 also.  I should have said indeed.

:97- :97-  I'll try to work it out with 111 good posts guys...

Now, shifting gears a little bit, it's funny that 777 was the room's number where I stayed the first time when I arrived to DR the last year... The next day before breakfast i realized and took the picture below...  I did a stop for a second wondering:  "would this be a signal ??   :103-    a bunch of good luck coming in bad times ??   :104-"

Not to start talking about witches, but it was indeed!!!!   :89-
