Title: Found in an S2000...wierd modification, or not?
Post by: shortrackskater on February 23, 2013, 10:36:00 PM
I bought another S2000! I'm going to post it and a story (on "found on CL") of what was wrong with it, which is funny I think.
But first I have some questions. This machine came directly out of the Mandalay Bay to the person I bought it from. I am not too experienced with s2000's but even with that in mind, I've never seen this:
First - It's got enhanced stereo sound but I've never seen speakers that were like this. The speaker is in the upper box but has a plastic chute that "sends" the audio to a nice chrome "vent" that's incorporated in the side panel of the cabinet. It looks great and sounds fine too.
But I noticed the left channel was not quite as loud as the right. When I removed the upper glass I found that, when it was converted to Ticket Out, the printer was placed on the left where the speaker was. So the simply moved the speaker above the printer and just kind of pointed the chute towards the vent!
I'm guessing this was a casino modification and not an IGT one!
The other weird thing is that, for the printer housing to be flat, the panel where some of the plugs run from the lower to upper part of the case had to be unhooked from the channel that it sits in, toward the back. It's just hanging there from one small nut. I installed it properly before I realized that it was intentionally put that way. Otherwise, the wire bundles elevate the printer too much.
Any comments? I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this.

Interesting!  Hope somone knows more.  Wonder if IGT released them this way?  I would think not due to the hoky left speaker?

Wasn't there a reason for that slim speaker? Cruise ships or something? It really doesn't reduce the footprint of the machine, but is a cleaner look than the Mickey Mouse ears hanging out the sides...

My Munsters machine was the exact same way including the board behind the printer being loosened so that it was hanging underneath, just as you described.

I ended up removing the printer and installing a free play device instead.
I put the speaker back where it was supposed to go and noticed that the
screw mount on the bottom of the cabinet was filed off so the printer could fit.
Now, only one screw holds the speaker in place on the side of the cabinet.
I also put the board that was removed behind the speaker back in place too.
The sound is now awesome.
I thought this was a Vision instead of an S2000?  I thought that style speaker defined a Vision?

BTW ... my machine also came from either Mandalay Bay or MGM Grand and I bought it from Craig's List here in LV.

Here's a picture of it ... I've since replaced the hole with a cool player panel I got from Glen.

Notice the machine formica matches the stand formica.  Is yours the same?  I had MGM Grand printer tickets in it, but it could be Mandalay Bay (same company).

Also, the guy I bought it from is a dealer at South Point.  Nice guy!

One option would be to install the short Munster reel glass and move the printer to the right of the reel shelf.
I have a Munster kit set up this way as I had to convert my machine from long reel glass to the short reel glass that came with my kit.
I would love to get the long reel glass and move my printer back to the top box where it belongs in my machine.

If you want to swap parts let me know. As I remember it's a reel shelf, printer bracket, display for the short glass, short Munster glass and the wire harness.

It is a Vision Ready machine (same as a S2000 for the most part) the speakers being in the top box is a dead give away
also the harnesses are different the 2
I can go into details on the harnesses if you like (but no backlit power, no printer harnesses normally, and some other differences)

Thanks everyone, so far! Mine has exactly the same stand and the printer tickets say Mandalay Bay. It also has locks everywhere...main door, belly glass, and bill box housing door.

It sounded too coincidental, so I checked my tickets again.  They are in fact Mandalay Bay!  I guess we both have a machine modified by the same tech.

That's funny! I really want to fabricate some kind of flexible chute since the output of the left channel just sort of sits there. Even with that, the sound is very good. In fact, it's great sound without that lower speaker like I have in my Barcrest. Story and pictures coming soon!

I do have one quick question... there's a fan in the top unit that isn't working. Is it needed? There's only one florescent light on top...no bonus game circuitry.

its just to  maintain  good air flow inside the machine but if its only in the top with the light no need it  :D

Good to know cause mine didn't have a fan at all ... just a vent hole where a fan should be.
