Title: Need help please - S5500 hopper not working after battery change & clear. FIXED
Post by: tkrozleski on March 08, 2013, 09:27:12 PM
Hello, I replaced a battery in a S5500 and did the SafeRam Clear and the machine works other than the hopper has no LED's lit and when you cash out it does not run and goes into error. The Forward and Reverse does not work. I believe the LED's were lit before the battery change?

I removed the hopper and can not see anything wrong. The LED's flicker during power up but none stay lit. Not sure if any should be lit when the door is open.

Is there a setting that was changed when I done the SafeRam clear? Was the hopper turned off during trhe clear? Just want to be sure my settings are correct.

What should I check?

Its been awhile since I had a 5500 but I would try the hopper test, diagnostic test #4.  It should force it to kick out 10 coins.

Hope this helps.

OK I tried the 04 hopper test and the hopper does not fire up at all. LED's are not lit up.

When I try to cash out the credits  it goes into error after a several  seconds being the hopper does not fire up.

Maybe a bad hopper board or a bad power supply?

Any other ideas?

I would like to know what parts I need to order.

Thank You!!!

Do a  visual inspection of the hopper  pins / connector...  I've had hoppers   with  pins pushed in /  pushed back...

I have checked the pins on the hopper and on the wire harness connector and they look great. None pushed out, broken off, or missing. When I manually drop a coin thru the optic it detects the coin. When I remove the hopper from the machine, it throws an error code.

What other troubleshooting procedures should I try?

I looked in the manual and I was unable to locate anything that shows a setting to disable the hopper. Is that even an option?

Thank You for the help on this so far.

My guess would be a  "board"  issue on the hopper...or possibly the motor on the hopper is "frozen"  ...(are the wires connected to motor?)

Just a suggestion... take the hopper apart...   inspect  motor, clean, etc...

Find /  buy another  hopper or  possibly just the hopper/board.   ( if you  have a frozen motor...and you put in a good board...the  motor may cause problems with "new" board Too ! )

Can we back up first...
You said you did a RAM Clear and that is what killed your coin hopper.
So we can assume it was working fine before the RAM clear?

It was a non working machine and the battery was dead. I replaced the the battery and did a Complete RAM clear.

I'm not 100% sure the hopper was working before the clear? Maybe the hopper was bad also? Was bought as a non working machine.

All other functions  work well except the hopper does not work when you cash out.

It makes the cash out noise/sound from the speaker like it's paying out , but hopper does not move  and eventually errors.

The LED's are not lit .

That's why I ask if it's maybe a bad power supply, failed hopper board, or is there a setting to turn off the hopper?

Thank You!

OK, that makes more sense to me now.

I agree, it may be the hopper control circuitboard, but first I'd check to see if the 24 volts is getting to the hopper.  Let me look through my data and see if there are any easily accessed test points.

Of course if anyone else on NLG forum knows off hand feel free to chime right in...

I see one test point for 24 volt but do not what other test point for the  0 volt test point and I'm not sure if the 24 volt that I'm seeing is the correct test point for input, so your help will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I should ask if you are comfortable poking around inside a machine, not everyone is.  If you are not comfortable then maybe you need to hire a local technician.

Assuming you are good with doing this yourself-

Yup, the 24V test point is right in the middle of the board.  Clip your black meter test wire to the machines metal chassis anywhere and the red test wire to the test point.  Now turn the machine on and see what you have.

Also, it appears the 24V first should appear on your hopper connector pins 8 and 13 together.   Measure this with your black lead still on chassis ground.

Check out these photos.

Hope this helps.

Can you spin the hopper by hand to make sure it is free

I'll spin it by hand and see if it is jammed.

Thanks!

FIXED !

There was 24 VDC at 8 & 13 so the power was there for the hopper.

The hopper turned freely no jams.

I changed the hopper board on the non-working hopper with a known working hopper board and the the hopper only worked in reverse with the test buttons on the board.

I tried a complete different hopper and it all worked fine.

So I changed the hopper motor on the non-working hopper also.

Wala ! It works.

I believe the motor shorted and took out the hopper board.

It had nothing to do with the battery change.

Mark   Thanks for the diagram's and info.

Thanks to all for there vauable input on this repair

Thanks to NLG for this great site and all the great folks here !!!!
