Title: Bally 5000+ - What's missing on my machine?
Post by: Wallgames on March 22, 2013, 05:08:45 PM
I recently bought a non-working Bally 5000+ "Cold Cash" slot machine.  Initially, there was no power.  The award glass is missing, and the previous owner's kids must have used the opening to drop various items onto the I/O board from above.  Disassembling the machine to clean it, I found a door hinge pin (like you might find holding the front door to its frame on your home) shorting between the I/O board and the frame.  I replaced the first and third fuse (5 amp), and powered it up.

The fluorescent lamps light, but the two LEDs on the MPU board flash continuously, about once per second.  I am hampered by the missing LED display, and cannot therefore determine an error code.

My questions are:

1. What items are missing?  Is there also a bracket to support the LED display?  Does anyone have a photograph of this area?

2. I assume it can operate without the LED display.  The MPU board has EPROMs in the U12 and U15 sockets, and a daughterboard which plugs into the U20 and U18 sockets.  The daughterboard has 4 more EPROMs, which are labelled U4, U20, U3 and U18.  Is there a special method for clearing RAM for this type of MPU board?

The EPROMs are as follows:
U12 - ME600000-2-1 03/20/89 27C512
U15 - ME600000-2-0 03/20/89 27C512
Daughterboard:
U3 - SE6A0000000-2-3 03/20/89 27C512
U4 - SE6A0000000-2-2 03/20/89 27C512
U18 - E070011X-05 08-16-91 27C256
U20 - E070011X-05 08-16-91 27C256

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Here are photographs of the manufacturer tags and the upper interior (missing the "Cold Cash" Award Glass, unfortunately).

Good buy.  Did you part it out or repair it?

I have a weakness for wanting to repair basket cases.

I repaired it, put a battery on the board and
did a ram clear and it was up and running.
I've repaired some of the draw/hold buttons,
but was worth every dollar.

I've only parted out one machine - a Summit.

Very nice.  Thanks for providing the photograph.

1. There seems to be a plastic frame attached to the glass with double sided tape. And LED PCB is attached to this frame with four screws.

2. Seems that the game doesn't start without display. I disconnected my display and powered up the game. The two LEDs on CPU just started to blink once per second just like yours. I didn't pull out the PCB but it looks like there's just two IC's and the 7-segments. Maybe there's a way to fool CPU to think that the display is there?

This is extraordinarily useful information.  Thank you as well for the photograph.  Now I can see what I'm looking for.

Thanks very much!
