Title: S+ has gone crazy
Post by: therockinelvis on April 01, 2013, 05:41:13 PM
When I first got this machine it was missing the cmos on board. I installed one from an extra board I had. Everything was working properly. Today while playing I had 80 credits on it and without hitting a pay it started paying out. When it was done I put a bill in and it payed coins. I went thru the menu and checked and set higher for credits, bills, etc. in menu 7. It accepted a bill and went to credits. started playing and it seemed fine. Machine was sitting idle then started paying out again like the cash out button had been pushed. No one was near it.  It is a 3 coin Triple Sapphire with 1048 and 4755 chips.

Maybe a bad microswitch on your cashout button?

Thanks Cowboy, I'll try changing the switch in the morning.

I agree with cowboygames.  I recall a situation in the past where a member had a machine that started cashing out on its own in the middle of the night with nobody near it.  He thought the machine (or house) was haunted.

It turned out that it wasn't a ghost -- the heat from the lamp in the Cash Out switch had heated the plastic just enough that it somehow expanded slightly and triggered the microswitch.

Long time ago i posted the answer to this problem had it happen to several machines .
MOSTLY THE EARLY DESIGN S+ WITH SMALLER PLASTIC SWITCHES FOR CASH OUT ETC .

the heat from the bulb on the cashout button around the deterorated plastic from years of use it would cash out by itself when it got really warm .
solution replace the cashout button R&R

Thanks Guy's. I changed the switch and it is back to normal. I checked the old switch and it seemed ok. Then I realised it was not hot. Another fix to put in my repair book. Thanks again, Jim

Just curious was the older stryle IGT S-PLUS machine you had the problem with ?? :103- :103- :103- :103-

buttons that had the very small call attendent -cash credit +bet one button then -with two long rectangle buttons for spin & max bet
were the culprits ..

or was your machine the  later model IGT S-PLUS  with the bigger square button holders ??

as i mentioned in my post on this the early style IGT S-PLUS
would do crazy things if the tiny tiny plastic bezel was worn out and deteriorated from heat ETC

they would cash out while playing a game or slam of the door or in middle of night cash out or even had a few start spinning on there own ..
THE HEAT "EXPANSION" WAS ENOUGH TO TRIGGER THE MICRO SWITCH .

I actually have never seen the later model S+PLUS UPRIGHT OR SLANT DO THIS ..

only the early built ones with the smaller plastic buttons same as on a IGT PE-POKER MACHINE .
if you need a picture i can drop the two in but im sure there is pics already on the forum of the difference .

if not check out my profile picture of the IGT S MODEL BUILT IN 1989 IT HAS THE TINY BUTTONS ..

It is the 1" by 1" button for cash out. I replaced the whole thing. It probally was just the lense cap. It looked funny and was the first thing I messed with. I guess that is why it started working and then went crazy again.

I would have never thought it would be an overheating micro-switch...I was gonna ask if you had a cat in the house... :72-

BUNKER WAKE UP LOL

its not the micro switch overheating its the plastic expanding  inthe button holder of the switch  hitting the micro switch button that's on the small igt buttons on early s+ i have seen it happen many times ..

I am thinking of putting a disable switch on the cash out button on all my machines. Tired of the kids accidently hitting cash out. Thought about just pulling the switch down some, but don't like how the light is like that. Plus it's a pain to get to those switches.

Pull one wire off the microswitch and cover it

I thought about that. Then it is a pain to get it back on when you need zero credits.

So another momentary switch across one of the wires and mounted on the bottom of the door  in that plastic cover where coins drop out maybe? That way both switches would have to be pressed at the same time to cash out, but you couldn't accidentally leave the switch on. Easy and out of sight. Anything that would require the door to be open to use it wouldn't work because you can't cash out with the door open.

Two screws and a nut removes the inter door panel. Makes for easy access to the buttons.

You are the professionals and I am still learning. I will take the advise of you all. I agree it is not that much trouble. If I sell the game it makes it easier on the next guy if it is not altered.

On the other hand, setting up some kind of cashout protection is actually a good thing and maybe a selling point as home users complain about this problem quite often

I put a top to a used up ladies shaving cream can on the cashout button. No more accidental cash outs........

I use a pocket knife, but you can use a tool of choice. Place tool behind one of the ears that hold the micro switch in place and move one side of the micro switch down about  1/16 of a inch. ( the side that has the little button on the micro switch )   Far enough that the plunger will not hit the micro. If and when you wish to use the button just push the micro up in place using just one finger. If you can't reach it with your finger just push it up with a screw driver.  No wires to short out and no butchered wires.

I believe I do the same thing that Buzz has described. Swing one end of the cherry switch away from the button assembly just far enough away so that the button doesn't trigger the switch when it's pressed -- problem solved.
