Title: Adding a TOPPER to S+
Post by: therockinelvis on April 05, 2013, 10:22:30 AM
I am wanting to add a topper to my S+. I will be using power supplies that need 110vac. I would like to have the topper come on when machine is switched on. Can I splice into the fluorescent light in the top box? I know the service plug on front of power supply stays hot. Is there a separate harness to run from the P/S to the top box? Any suggestion are welcome. As allways Thank-Ya-Thank-Ya-Very-Much, Jim

Back years ago I used the service plug to light my Spam can. All my machines are powered by a separate light switch in the slot stands I built or a power strip.

I agree with Ron. You would be better off using an external power switch (I use an X10 controller) to control your machines power.  That way you can leave the machine switched on all of the time, and use the service plug for your topper power supply.  :89-  This will also save wear and tear on your machines toggle switch.

I was told to allways have power to machine and use the toggle switch to turn it on. I had a power supply go bad and was told not to use a power strip to turn on machine. Was told it did not give full 110 as fast. Was that wrong? It is a pain opening machine to power on, but worth it if it saves the power supply. Fact or Fiction??

More Fiction than fact. I used a surge protector power strips on all machines for at least 8 years and never had a power supply go out. In addition all mine have a separate switch in the stand as stated earlier.

There's some good discussion of adding toppers to an S+ in the Top This (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?board=85.0) category here on the site, including this thread (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=94.msg404#msg404) where I added an S2000 topper to a S+ machine I had.

On an S Plus machine, the toggle switch switch's the 110 V on the Primary side of the Power supply transformer.
Leaving this switch on and switching the 110 V externally does the exact same thing.  :89-
You will not damage the power supply by doing this.  :60-
