Title: NLG Phone Number Puzzle
Post by: StatFreak on March 16, 2009, 01:20:15 PM
This thread has been split out from the Site Outage (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=2312.msg17914#msg17914) thread.

When NLG is off the air...... I can always hear Davids voice in the back of my mind saying " OOOPS.....So thats what that button does...."  :72-

:96- I know...I'm just kidding...

Well, in the past I used the actual numeric values that the site uses in the SMS code (e.g., 97 for :97-) to put a hidden message in my text, so you weren't wholly incorrect to look at the source code. This was a beat-over-the-head type of code. :72- :72-

Actually, I meant something more like these:

The answer to all of these is 928 754 4147

Easy:
(:92- :8-)    :7- :54-    --     :4- :147-

Moderate:
(:57- :50- :56-)    :55- :53- :52-   --  :52- :49- :52- :55-

Difficult (maybe not that difficult):
ÆçTAG

Extremely Difficult (I honestly am not sure if I could solve this if I were given this one)

Nope. What about 49?  4+9-3=10, not 1.

Hint: I designed all of these with SB in mind.

It's not the answer itself that you're looking for; it's how the answer is embedded in the puzzle, so no PAR, although it is definitely related to your interests. On the other hand, using HxD is much warmer than using Evolve-O-Matic, and may help you with other puzzles too...  or not.

<EDIT> I just tried what you did SB. That is very innovative!  :131- :3- :3-  I wish I had thought of that; but it wasn't intentional. Very COOL sleuthing. :71-

I will say this: There is no unnecessary information in the codes. That is, you won't end up with a long string of stuff with the phone number in only a small part of it, as it was with the word "PAR".

I tried to look at the patterns repeating such as the 4s, but there seemed to be too many sets, I tried without the 5 255 combos, must be more to it.  I thought I had it but once applied to all, it didn't work.  I think I'll go shop some slots, it's much easier for me.  :103-  :103-  :103-

If you can successfully get bailout money from Congress as an individual, not only will you be able to buy every slot machine in the state of New Jersey and fly every member of NLG into town to attend a dozen lavish parties, you'll be able publish a book, wear a bright green suit with exclamation points all over it instead of question marks, and outsell that question mark guy's book a hundred times over. :131- :131- :131-

Be creative! We're talking twenty or fifty billion dollars give or take a few dozen billion. Start a bank -- a very small bank -- maybe one with only a single depositor -- and install yourself as CEO. :5-
Then go to the hearings with hat in hand, a great story and the press in tow.  :97- :97-

Even if you don't get the money, you might end up with 0.1% of it in the form of a 50 million dollar movie and book deal for the rights to your story.

just adapting it to accept S+ parts requires some sound thinking and combination of welding/woodworking skills.

Cherry wood is beautiful, but expensive. My friend was an amateur woodworker for some time (he no longer has the space for his workshop) and he built me a DVD/VHS/CD cabinet out of cherry with oak trim. We decided not to stain the wood, but to let it develop it's own color over the years instead.

The lattice work is cherry and the dark frames around each piece of glass are oak.

Here are some pictures. I wish I had this kind of talent. :131- :131-

That is pretty Stat, with piano hinges too :131-

When we sat down to design it and realized how large it would need to be to fit my collection, we looked at several design options. Building the doors to hold inventory effectively doubled the capacity, but the fastening device had to be able to hold all of that weight suspended at 90 degrees. Piano hinges were the only choice, and since the materials were costing me a fortune anyway, I figured why not do everything up in brass? Finding the knobs on the outside proved difficult and were a last minute purchase. I had searched the internet for a couple of months (while he was building the cabinet) for something suitable, but was surprised how few choices there were when I limited myself to polished brass -- our theme -- and to handles that would befit a piece of furniture this size.

It's actually two identical pieces that stack. He built them so that they could both sit on the floor and still look like finished pieces in case that turned out to be a better way to place them down the road in a future home. That's why the top, middle, and bottom frames all look the same.

I met him through work years ago -- he's a web designer. :96-  For a while there, he had so many orders for projects that he had hopes of going into business full-time. But life seldom works out the way we want it to. :8-

When I was about 17, I made a huge case for all my cassette tapes....though made of cheap pine, it served its purpose..
while riding around town, the girls would be in the back seat checking them out exclaiming excitedly "Play this one!"...I felt like some kind of driving DJ in a volkswagen bus....needless to say, I was at a lotta local parties back then :72-

Great puzzles Stat!
Wish I would have had more time to decipher them. Been very busy lately!!! Did recognize the IBM set characters (DOS)
But the 15 emoticons representing 10 numbers had me baffled.  :103- :103- :103-
It looked like 8-bit binary, but why 15 of them? If I had just multiplied 8 x 15 / 10, I would have gotten 12 and been on my way.  :30- :30- :30-
Very clever code!  :89-

Great puzzles, great woodwork! Not everyone can do everything - fortunately! If Stat could make cabinets like that as well as do the math, he'd be omnipotent. We'd have to sacrifice virgins to get him to notice our posts.

I have a cartoon somewhere on the relative importance of skills - aha, here it is.

:72- :72- :72- :72- Great cartoon!

I have to agree there. Most laymen hear "computer [insert your occupation here]"  and immediately expect that a, you know everything there is to know about IBM PC clone style computers and Microsoft Windows, and that b, you will fix theirs for nothing.

Doctors also have to deal with issue B quite often (expectation of free services). So do musicians, btw. Issue A stems from the fact that non-technical people don't understand that the computer field is almost as vast as all other occupations combined. Someone at a party mentions that they were the chief architect on the design team of the original Intel Pentium IV processor and invariably someone else will respond, "Oh, you're in computers? So is my son! He's does data entry for Walmart. You should talk with him." :7-

Now if THAT isn't truth, I don't know what is!   :72-
I am just a layman but know my way around a pc primarily because I have experienced so many issues.
Now that I "know" how to fix issues, I get phone calls from all over to help resolve pc issues. Heck even
just Wednesday I got a ph call from someone that I told to call Tech Support. They did then turned around
and called me right back. Funny thing is I basically did the same thing Tech Support did.  Apparently they just
like how I handle it better. While I'm happy to help, I am no tech and nowhere near a professional. Doesn't stop it though!  :25-
