I wouldn't think unplugging it would critically harm anything...

Does the Bill Validator cycle? Fans running?

I had a problem this weekend where the monitor starting pixelating.  I turned if off and discovered the monitor had come forward a little just enough to unplug it slightly.  I'd make sure the monitor is pushed in all the way, all the IO cards are pushed in securely, check the power plug inside the machine that it's in snug and fit, etc.  May be something simple like that.  I agree with Roz ... although I wouldn't make it a practice, unplugging a machine while it's turned on shouldn't have any adverse effect.

Pull out and reseat your monitor. Sounds like something is just loose.

Is the screen a CRT or LCD ? . What size monitor ? Do you have another machine that you can swap out a different monitor ? If so does the problem follow the monitor ?  I  am having a similar problem and it appears to be the board under the monitor . If you have another machine just pull out the monitor and try it in the other unit ( NOTE power off before changing monitor ) if it boots up and runs it is something in the monitor assembly .   P.B.

Couple of other ideas (we need a "grasping for straws" icon) ...

1)  Check the fuses near the power supply.

2)  Look at the eproms on the MPU and make sure there are no signs of burnt traces or loose eproms.  One time, my monitor was blank because I installed the eprom incorrectly.  I know you didn't remove them, so this shouldn't be the issue.  Never hurts to check though.

They should be near the power supply at the bottom of the machine.  There are 3 knobs that twist and pull out, one for each fuse.
