Title: Clueless,again
Post by: Randy0777 on March 31, 2009, 05:35:33 AM
Not sure if this is the right section... Need some input on a Bally "Draw Poker" The Picture you see was the way I rec. it  Only thing I did was hook up the DBV(???) and powered it on. Getting a slight "popping" sound from the speaker...Nothing else  :104-  Clueless as to how to proceed :25-

Hi  You have a Bally 5500 poker machine.    the most likely problem is the power supply, that unit mounted on the backwall.    on the inside there is a removeable power supplythat can be tested by applying 115vac and checking the outputs.  there are two plugs going to this supply, one for the 115ac and the other for the outputs.

Also,  watch as you turn the machine on and off,  if you see abright flash when turning off chances  are that the moinitor is good or at least you are getting high voltage, also if you run your hand on the tube itself you should feel static electricity, another sign that the high voltage is good.

I've heard putting your tongue on the fat black wire hooked to the CRT willl also verify the presence of
voltage, kinda like you can do with a 9 volt battery. :30- :30- :96-

WAIT!!! DON'T REALLY DO THIS!!! I'M ONLY KIDDING!!!! :72- :72- :97- :97- :138- :138-

I'm getting a white flash from the monitor when I turn it off. Also it has some type of unit above the board on the top that has lights lit. The speaker steady crackels and beeps, it stops if I push the reset button on the top...but only as long as I hold it in. Not sure where else to start  :25- Looking for a manual now.

HI    these are pictures of the power supply mounted on the back wall!!

#104 is the front view
#105 is the view from the back, the powersupply to the left of the blue cap is the ps that I am refering too, it goes out all the time ,takes 15 min to replace and about 35 dollars with shipping,  Blueridge probably has them in stock.the two pin connector is 115 vac in   the other is the outputs    Jim
you don't need anything special to check this out, use the power cord that plugs into the side and a meter and this will eliminate this as a source for your problem.

I once saw my friend get knocked across the room by a CRT.   He was ok but really shaken up.

Thanks Jim. I checked the voltage and yea,its blown.

When you get a new power supply let us know if the machine works!

When I built my coctail mame I had to remove the cover of the TV as the depth with the case on was too deep.

At the time a 17" TUBE CRT was going for $700, I wanted at least a 19".

I settled on a 27" Flat Tube (oxy moron) TV on a scratch and dent deal at Walmart for $189.00
Someone had run the fork lift through the side of the box and cracked the back cover.

Anyways I built the mame unit in the garage and when I went to put it in the basement it was too wide to go through the door so I had to turn it sideways.
The TV was just dropped in so I had to take that back out first........I was very cautious....

When I moved I had to reverse the process before putting it on the truck again I was very cautious.....

When the NORONs delivering my stuff brought it in they simply took the TV out (tearing the wires despite my quick release clips) then Noron #1 grabs the back of the tube to support it.
Luckly Moron #2 had a good grip on the other half of the Chasis (thats why he gets a M and not a N) cause Noron #1 got flung at least 3 yards not to mention a nasty burn on three fingers where he was wearing a wedding ring.
Thats about 3.5m for my Canadian friends ......What Idiot wears jewerly when moving furniture.....

I would of thanked them for removing the charge from the capacitors so that I could safely work on it! :97-

Replaced the power supply and now I have lights at least. But still can not get anything on the monitor(and the beeping stoped  :3-) Tried to adj. the monitor and the most I can get it is lines on the top part of it  :99-

Sounds like you have to "Stretch" those lines down ....try adjusting the horizontal and vertical knobs ( Like an old TV)

I've tried turning all of them. The most I can get is a few lines at the top or a black screen   :103-

Still clueless  :89-
No one around me has one of these working so I can't switch boards to check(which I think is the problem). The board "looks" the same type of pin out as a "Cherry Master" board. I was thinking about putting the board in a CM and seeing what came up. However,I can not find a manual on the Bally V5500 yet to check the schematics for the Bally board. if the board was bad, should I still have a error on the screen? What should I see if no board was installed ?

Hi Randy

Dont think pinouts will be same as cherry master. Will probably let me smoke out  :88-
With the machine powered up press the pseudo coin button (Not sure where its located on the upright but should be somewhere near the coin acceptor) If you get a coin in sound at least your processor is working and it may be a faulty screen. If it is a board fault and it totally dead i would suspect the main processor chip. If the board boots up into a scrambled screen you will need a saferam clear chip which goes into U10.

Regards
Ian

When I press the pseudo coin button or the reset button nothing happens. I'll see if I can try some other boards or chips and post back.
Thanks again Ian

Could not find a complete set of chips  :60- So I switched the chips from one board to another...Same thing, nothing!!!

I replaced all of the chips, and still no sound, picture, etc. Only thing that seems to work is the top and belly lights and the change button on the door. Checked the pins for voltage that go to the monitor and getting 120. I get the white flash when I turn it off and if I try to adj the monitor I get a few lines at the top. Thought I may had a bad chip or bad monitor...or both  :97- . The manual I have does not cover much trouble shooting, so any thought would  :99-

It sounds like you are not getting a video signal out of the slot.

From the sound of it if you are getting lines and a flash it sounds like you are getting high voltage.
If you run your finger across the monitor when it is on do you feel  static ? or is it dead.

If this were mem I would be buying another one and doing the swaptronics between the two.

Thanks Jay, yes,I do get the static feel on the screen. That is what I thought also about grabbing another and do the swap thing  :89- ,but I have not found one . And cant find one locally working  :37-

Thanks to Wayne,Ian and John  :131- :131- I finally have it working. I could write pages of things that I've tried...but it all came down to chips and power supply  :37-

Last question and I hope I'm done with this game  :97-  For some reason I can't get the DBV to work. I replaced transports,heads(145 & 200's with every Bally flash ver.) and the board on the BV. It will cycle a sec when I turn it,but no other response...except for the light on the inside of the head. If I push the bv reset button the trans. will cycle. Also, when I have the head hooked up the machine will not play...As far as take coins and if I push the pesuido button it will give me credits, but the deal button will not work, also if I turn the reset key it has no effect at all. Tried clearing it whoards of times . As I said, everthing works great without the BV hooked up. Oh,and I also pulled every harness and backboard out and cleaned and checked everthing. if I had a boat, this would be my anchor  :89-
