Title: What fades reel strips?
Post by: Big Ed Deline on September 25, 2013, 08:00:55 PM
What washes the color out of reel strips?
Sometimes I see a machine for sale and the strips looks like they have been in the sun for years.
Is it because someone cleaned them improperly? Is it the lights in the machine? IF so which lights? The florescent one above the reels or the backlights?
And finally.... IF it is the lights, do replacing with LEDs reduce or eliminate the fading process?  Any knowledge is appreciated.

The flourescents above the reels.  Sometimes they leak UV rays and eat up the color.

So by that .... I assume that LEDs (No UV) will eliminate the fading issue?  Has anyone used LEDS and noticed further fading?

I don't know how long it would take being as most home users don't leave their machines on 24/7. The heat from the backlights could also play a part in fading and I don't think washable strips are susceptible the way non-washable were. That said, I've been using LED for as long as 3 years and haven't noticed any fading on what were brand new washable strips at that time

leds do not emit UV, so they would be safe.  But what cowboygames says it's true.  Most people at home don't leave their machine on 24x7.  It takes a long time for a fluorescent bulb to fade a strip, but if you want to be absolutely safe, you go with LEDS.
