Title: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: rickhunter on November 03, 2013, 11:55:29 PM Here's a picture of my currently growing batch of babies. I have about 160+ right now after selling about 100 to local stores. They are currently just over 1 year old today.

Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: DoubleZero on November 04, 2013, 12:14:46 AM Very cool! What variety are those? They look too light to be Percula Clowns.
Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: rickhunter on November 04, 2013, 12:16:04 AM Amphiprion Ocellaris, they are what are called "false percula".
Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: DoubleZero on November 04, 2013, 12:23:30 AM Aha, Ocellaris. I've had a few of those over the years. I moved past them once my anemones killed one too many of my other fish. My fault, really. Cool fish tho!
Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: CVslots on November 04, 2013, 02:32:30 AM OMG!! I love clown fish! Nothing more relaxing than watching one wiggle into an anenome! Awww, salt water tanks, love them! If only they were still "cool"...I loved mine when I had it, then the kid came and fish went by the wayside! I've often thought of getting another one, although they are not quite as "cool" as they were in the 90s!
Now, this variety, since they are the "False" clowns, what is the difference really? Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: Styx on November 04, 2013, 04:26:51 AM Huh,
They don't look funny to me. :97- -Styx Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: rickhunter on November 04, 2013, 11:52:49 AM Roz they are closely related, just some minor physiological differences, they can even produce fertile hybrids, they are called percularis hybrids. The ocellaris are the more common of the species. In the 90's fish only tanks were the rage as coral propagation and rearing was not feasible. Nowadays reef tanks are the IT thing and fish only tanks are not the rage. The population of clowns in the wild is being affected due to overcollection, so I started doing this to provide local fish stores with another supply so they don't buy the wild ones. It is a lot of work, but very rewarding.
Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: CVslots on November 04, 2013, 02:01:27 PM Ooooohhh...I am insanely jealous Rick! I wonder if CA stores would be in? I would love to have an excuse to have a tank. I would have just clowns and anenomes...well, I say that now, but you know how it gets! And then one tank turns into 2...and then 3...
Yah, in the 90s live rock was about as cool as it got! No one knew much about corals. People invest wild money into setting tanks up, and then sadly have to get rid of them for whatever reason. I see them on our local CL quite a bit. Title: Re: While not exactly tech related, I aquaculture clownfish. Post by: stayouttadabunker on November 04, 2013, 02:42:24 PM That's amazing Rick.... :133-
