I'm working on a new project, it's a Bally E2000 with a sound board.. If I push the red switch on the top of the sound board, the machines starts playing music, if that's what you want to call it  :58-.. Once it starts playing the music it never stops  :103-... The manual I have doesn't say too much about the sound option.. So I'm looking for someone who might have had a machine with the sound board for advice..  :99-  From what heard or think, it should only play when the reels spin or on a payout?

I hope you find out how to make it work when the game is playing, I have a friend that has one of those and I would like to get the sound working for him.

This is a Bar / 7 machine, single line 3 coin.. The 3rd coin 7 Jackpot is Progressive, but I think it was hooked up to a system in a casino...  It doesn't show any numbers for the progressive jackpot..

Here is some pics of my friends machine and the sound board in the top, is yours similar to this sound board?

Mine has the same board on the back wall, but not the second board laying flat in front of it.. I turned the sound pot on mine and I hear static, but when you push the red switch button on top it plays sounds or music, but never shuts off.. Push the switch a second time just resets and starts the sounds all over again.. Only was to shut it up, is to turn it off??

The second board lying down is the credit board.
Does the display for the credit work?

I'll take pics in the morning.. There doesn't seem to be a display for a progressive jackpot, front glass says progressive jackpot paid by attendant.. My machine doesn't have credits, Coins in, coins out...

I have one of these boards, does the same thing; kill the power to make it stop playing music. Haven't found a J1 pinout yet, trying to make it work in a machine. What is the EPROM tag number?

Ok.. Finally got the pictures of the sound board, and I/O for yea.. Too me the ribbon cable on the I/O to the sound board looks like it might be wrong? Checks the ribbon cable pins and they look  good, not bent or broken.. As for your question ramegoom, I can tell what the tag says on the sound board, it's faded.. Maybe if I take the board out and uses my lighted magnifier I can get the numbers.. I'm going to go digging in a few boxes to look and see if I have another sound board to try..

Odd the board in your machine seems to be lacking the RAM chip. I don't know enough about these sound cards to give much of an opinion though. The ribbon cable should be pretty straight forward though, long as the side with the beveled edge of the socket aligns with the red stripe on the cable.

I might have a progressive machine similar to yours, I'll see if it has a sound card.

Ok.. I have the tag number. It reads E-861-2 Ver C Date 10/12/82. I did locate another sound board to try that has the extra EPROM. It's has the exact same tag number.. I'll try to get it back together in a bit.

E-861-2 is the same EPROM as the one I have. Can't imagine why your first board didn't have the RAM chip. Wonder if you can just add it? They must have jumpered past the chip though.

I can't find any useful info on that 16 pin jumper cable, and its pinout chart. That would be a good place to start. The 5000 series sound card uses a grounding input on each sound, and I'm thinking the earlier E2000 cards would work the same way. This way, you can easily test the card. Still searching for the answer.

I looked over you pictures and things look OK.

Well I tried the spare sound board. There is no differance  :103-  Both boards do the same thing, no sound when coined up, Or when the reel spin.. The only way I can get any sounds are by pushing the red switch. Once it goes thru a series or sound it continues to play a constant stream of 3-4 different sounds? The only way it stops is to turn it off.. Could it be as simple as dip switch settings on the MPU? Could one of the dip switches needs to be on for the sound to operate? As for the original board it seem to never have had the other EPROM. It was not removed..

I hope you're right about the dip switches, on my Bally pinball machines the dip switches have an effect on that type game sounds you have.

In the picture (Progressive I/O) above the white
label next to the I/O board is the machine specific dip settings.

Gary, I have one E2000 machine with sound and I it's been a while since I worked on the sound card. I think if you push the reset on the hopper board it will stop the sound that plays when you push the test button on the sound board. I believe the dip switches do effect the sound. I will look at my machine tomorrow and get back to you on the dip switch settings. Mine is set to attract feature and plays tones/music when not played for an extended time.

So your saying the dip switch setting should be marked inside the cabinet? I'll have to get my flash light out and check around. Thank..  Gary

The volume pot's on these sound boards over time become oxidized and will not work properly. If you rotate the pot back and forth several times to get a good connection and it may revive your sound. Also reseating the chips may help if you have no sound.

Gary in your I/O board pic shows a sticker on the back wall of the cabinet to the left of the board, does that have info on it?

Tim,  It looks like it, but everyone's sleeping now. I'll pull the reels out in the morning and see what it says.

Well the paper tag says to have switch 2 on.. Switch 1 is for the chime, and 7 needs to be off.. Doing this has not made a difference with the sound? I have a couple of the small boards that attach to the I/O where the ribbon cable plugs if from the sound board. I guess I could try a different one to see if that's my problem?

Tim.. I tried pushing the reset on the hopper board, but it didn't stop the sound after pushing the test button on the sound board, just continued to play   :wtf1-  :7-

I looked at the pictures and compared them to
both of the machines I have and they are the same.
I you want you can send me your boards and I will
test them in my machine.
I did this for another member and his problem was
a bad U2 chip. I was able to repair it for $10.

Ok here is a picture of the small board located in the lower left side of my I/O.. It has 16 jumper wires soldered on it.. The number 2 jumper under the #4 section is cut on the board? Both of the other spare boards of these I have, the jumpers are different? Does anyone know what they are for or do? The other one I put in makes a chime noise on the very first coin played, them nothing else?

Both of my machines don't have that board, so I think its
part of the progressive. The other smaller board on the
right is the only board I have and the sound works good.

You might try leaving that board out and put the ribbon cable
in the plug that the card plugs into.
That's how mine is setup.

Ok I'll give it a try without that extra left board on my I/O. I had two spare I/O boards with both the extra boards. Maybe someone else knows what the left on does?

Well I removed the left small board from the I/O and reconnected the ribbon cable that goes to the MPU. I now have sound but its not totally correct. When you first turn it on, it doesn't alway make the coin in sound. Sometimes when the reels spin the music doesn't play, but I get a loud noise. After playing it for a few minutes it seems to play correct? Then in the middle of a spin it just starts play a melody and wouldn't stop till the next coin was played?? I tried reseating the chip but that didn't help..  I was surprise to see it plays music when the door open, just wish it stopped when the door closes.

Just a quick note.. I've noticed that the longer the machines on and played, the better the sound becomes? It's almost like the machine looses its memory or settings? Don't get me wrong, the machine operates correct, it's just the sound option that's not operating correct.. Both of my sound board do the same thing, So I'm wondering if my sound problem lies some where else, like a personality chip or program? I'm running out of things to try? Any ideas from others who have worked in the E-Series Ballys..

I took a look at my E2000 with sound and all the dip switches are ON, except #3.

When I press the test button on the sound board it will not stop til I close the door and drop a coin in.

The sound on mine fades out when the machine sets turned off. I have to rotate the volume pot back and forth several times to get a good connection inside the pot and then it will be fine again

Here are the sound wire connections on my E2000.
