Title: My New Toy - One of a Kind! Video Inside!!
Post by: angryninjas on November 20, 2013, 07:45:50 PM
Completely custom design, produced by the same manufacturer that IGT's factory casino glass and backlit strips are made by.  This is actual IGT screened and etched glass, not plexiglass.  WOW is it expensive, at just over $600 to have a single kit produced... but holy crap it came out nice!  Christmas came early for me this year  :)  Here's a video

Thanks.  It was very expensive to have produced, but worth it in my opinion.  The kit cost me as much to have made as the entire machine with freight cost me originally, lol.

Lol, yes it does, thanks to your harness  :)  After seeing the quality of their work, I think I'm going to see if they can do a topper insert for it as well.  Since they do all of IGT's stuff, they should already have the template for this topper, since it was originally an IGT Mash unit.  My plexiglass topper looks good, but the vividness of the colors on their glass is incredible and would complete the machine.

No prob, anything to help fellow NLG brethren. Thanks for the 12pk! Ha

Is that a flat rate ($600) for a custom kit of any kind? How much for custom strips alone?

Very Impressive I must say  :244-
Have you thought about adding a sound sim to it ?

Yep.  Not including graphic design, I had to do all of that myself.  The only thing they will do for design is make sure the symbols all line up correctly on the strips, and create your bright lighting effect on the white plate in the places you tell them you want it.  I think with the price of the kit and shipping, it came to like $610 or something like that.  The shipping alone was $60 of it, but it was packed like it contained nitroglycerin, lol.

I got a quote on a single set of strips from them before... pricey... $210 shipped, and thats without any "add-ons".  For add-ons, I paid $40 for the glitter effect.  The "sparkle" holographic style strips, like triple diamond, can be done for $60 more.  The sparkle material would have been overkill on this kit though... I like the gloss black background, especially with the glitter on some of the symbols.  Like I said, very pricey stuff, but the final result is amazing.

I wish I could.  It's an R-Board game, so the sounds are embedded on the soldered in chips  :(  Working on a custom manufactured sound add-on though, that will plug right into the netplex board and be triggered by any reel combinations or machine events that we choose.  More on that to come... waiting on a prototype from the manufacturer  ;)

Haha Nice....I just thought if you went to all this trouble
where is the sound, not saying it isn't awesome the way it is
look forward to the next video.

That's amazing!  Do you have fluorescent tube behind the glass or LED panel?

Very nice! :244-

Thanks.  Thats just regular cool white fluorescents behind the glass.  I've considered the LED kits, but haven't seen them in a machine in person yet and wondering the difference in lighting that it makes.  The reel glass has RGB LED's in it, as shown in the video, for the colored remote control lighting.

I thought it was a tube because one thing a tube offers is when you move up and down (like you do in the video), the light changes as your eyes pass over the text.  The text appears to light up along the edges as your eyes pass by the tube.  With an LED, you lose that.

However, LED back lights really do bring out the colors.  I've seen it, but I don't personally have any.  They're $40 to $50 for one light at Suzo's and Kiesub.  I've thought about it, but have to wait for my slot budget to build back up again.

Ahhh, good to know.  I'd hate to lose that effect.  We intentionally designed it to have that effect on the text, lol.  I could always get a set and try it though, and put them in one of my other machines if I didn't like the way it affected the colors and text on this one.

Super cool, Dave! That kit has really come together well. Regarding the topper though, aren't those normally produced with Plexi? I understand your desire to make it glass for improved color intensity, but if IGT's doing it with Plexi, why aren't you getting the same result?

I'm only asking because of the Wild Thing topper I'm designing. Enlighten me.

I shouldn't have said plexi, I should have said laminated vinyl covered plexi.  IGT uses a rear mounted ultra thin film and I believe they use a form of heat to apply it.  It's not backlit film. It's thinner than that... Like even thinner than Saran Wrap.  More like a membrane than a film, and then covered with a thicker plexi in front of It.  Mine is a high gloss coated backlit laminated vinyl.

Got it. So too tough to replicate that process I gather. I'll watch to see how things evolve for you. Again though, very nice job!

Thanks guys.  I hate to say it, but this one came out nicer than the one I sold to Bryan Cranston.  Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, lol

If it weren't so expensive I would go through with my Star Trek Theme that I was building up about 6 years ago.  Here's my finished Belly Glass Art.

Very nice Rick.  Yeah, the price is high for the real glass.  If you don't mind plexi, I can do that for you much cheaper.  Shoot me a PM

Whoa... just got a quote for the topper insert from the same company.  They price they quoted me must be for actual glass and not the plexi insert I was asking for, because for the single piece, the quote was the same as the single piece 16" top glass... over $200.  It would look nice, but that's WAAAAYYYY too high for a topper plexi, lol.  Hopefully he just misunderstood.  Anyways, at least they had the template, so if anyone else has the same style topper with CDS Progressive meter built in, I thought I would share the template that IGT uses (no, the template is not copyrighted, so it's sharable, only the original MASH artwork that was originally on there is).  Thought it might be useful to someone.

Makes you appreciate what the casinos are paying for every new machine, ya know? Especially when you see 1,200+ machines on a single casino floor.

Let me know if you "happen across" the standard oval template.

Will do.  And the quote was not a mistake.  He said the plexi is more expensive than doing the glass because it';s all the same work on their end, and then more because all the chaser light holes have to be laser cut.  Guess my own custom plexi topper that I made for it is looking much better now, haha.
