I turn mine on and leave them on till I'm done for the day then turn them off. If I'm not using them very much then one day a week I turn them on in the morning and leave them on for the day

The main reason to shut them off would be to save electricity.  If you only have one, that may not be a big deal.  If you have a lot of machines, the extra cost may be significant.
If you don't care about the extra cost, then leave them on.  Also, the more machines you have running, the more you will notice the heat from them .
Probably not a problem in the winter, but in the summer it may be an issue.

For me, turning them off is all about saving on wear and tear. Depends on your situation and expectations for access to spare parts in the future

my opinion is they are designed to be on 24/7. it is actually more wear and tear turning them on and off.
so for me its just a matter of saving electricity if i am not doing anything with them

Yeah that was what I was wondering.

In my limited experience, it seems the standard fluorescent bulbs emit enough UV light to fade glass graphics and bake plastic components over time (See: http://tinyurl.com/mnthv9h for results of a 2012 UV study). I understand it takes years of illumination for damage to occur, but with the old bulbs (I don't think this is an issue with LED retrofit bulbs), it does give one more reason to power down when not in use – particularly if you have rare glass that you're intent on keeping.

My personal machine is powered on maybe 10 hours per year - I hardly ever play it.
I seem to only turn it on when I want to try to solve a problem for a members' question.
Every blue moon I see a cool game kit, buy it, and install it.
I'll play it for a few hours then shut it off for a few months.
Because of this, most of my game kits are in "minty" shape... :72-
