Title: What model is my Universal ????????
Post by: Randy0777 on May 19, 2009, 09:34:19 PM
Hi Uniman,I read your other post about this topic and did not think I should hi-jack the thread  :89-.
I tried pressing the buttons to move through the menu, but no luck  :37-
The tilt light is flashing on the reel glass, and the crdit meter says 3300 and the win meter says(well the last four numbers are staying at 5550) but the first two rotate between 55,50,and 14  :103-
Thanks for any help  :131-

Feel free to hijack any of the Universal threads. They don't get much replys anyways!  :72-

Your machine, Phantom Spin, has the 8800 board. The 5555 is not normal! Error 50 is door open, error 14 is excessive credits.
Since your credit meter says 3300 and Universal only allowed up to 2500 credits, I would say that's your problem.
Easiest thing to do is a simple RAM clear.
1.Shut the machine off.
2. In the round hole at the top of your board there should be a tiny push button. Push and hold this button in while powering up the machine. Hold it in for about three seconds and release. (Push and hold, then power up, continue to hold for 3 sec's)
3. Hopefully all should be good now!   :89-

Cool game! A lot like IGT Haywire, this game respins. But if you hit the three Phantoms, the game will respin to three 7's, then to Triple Bars, then Double Bars, and finally Bars! So you get the jackpot and 540 credits more! Very cool!!!   :71-

Thanks for the reply  :3-
Held the button in and did a reset..... Now win meter stays at all 0's and the credit meter is staying at 1110  :103-

Very Strange!
You probably already did, but do another clear.

I installed the hopper and done another clear, now I get  1110 as the last four of the win and the first two rotate between 10 and 11 and credit says 1110. Also, the does not have a bill validator in it

Sounds like board trouble.  :103-
Almost like your in Test Mode. I would check the wiring behind (or left) of the board for any coins, tokens, screws, etc that maybe shorting the system. But it really looks like board trouble.
Give me a bit of time to dig up the dip switch settings for the 8800 board. With no BV, you need to have dips set to no BV.

Jim

There is a 4-dip switch at the front of the board. (SW#2 )With no BV, turn all four off.
I'm sure this is not your problem with the meters, but that is the setting.

The one on the left or the middle ? ...the one on the left has the four of them off

Just seen wher you said 2  :89-...putting it together

Title: Re: What model is my Universal ????????
Post by: Randy0777 on May 20, 2009, 12:09:19 AM
On the win meter I get ,94,50,13...all the rest is zero.

EDIT,after another reset I get 94 and 50

Title: Re: What model is my Universal ????????
Post by: uniman on May 20, 2009, 12:37:48 AM
Any error in the 90's is a BV error. 13 is power interrupt, not a problem at powerup. 50 is door open, it continue to blink until game is initiated. Same with 13.
Errors in the 90's will cause a tilt. Not 13 or 50.
(Need to do a RAM clear whenever dip switches are changed.)

The Red Wings win again!  :3- :3- :3-

Almost forgot, error 94 is BV has no power. If all switches are OFF on SW2 this error should not happen.

Title: Re: What model is my Universal ????????
Post by: Randy0777 on May 20, 2009, 12:43:23 AM
On the two switches that have four, all of them are off  :103- I do not know what the larger dip switch settings do. And I can not get rid of the 50 code. Held themin, pulled them out (when I do one of them it plays a sound)

Just pulled the board and checked them again.... one was not pushed ALL the way  :37-

Anyway,the game is playing  :3-   :131- :131- JIM  :131- :131-

I'll be able to tell you soon  :89- Cleaning the reels, etc.

It plays some beeping sound when the reels spin,if you get a phantom is plays something weird and the reels spin faster and longer. If you win ,a bell goes off(like a jackpot bell). I had one phantom and a 7 and it played something else and started a re-spin.....as far as I got :)

And what type of BV do these things take :103-

The sound is a bit strange for this game. An erie spin sound.

The dip switches;

SW1   an 8-pac dip    #1 thru #4 are used for credit limit. All four ON is maximum credit limit of 2500.
#5 is for the candle. OFF if you want it to flash, ON if you want it on.
#6-#7 for hopper type, OFF-OFF regular hopper, OFF-ON asahi-seiko hopper, ON-OFF and ON-ON for high speed hopper.
#8 for credit/cash    ON for credit only, OFF for credit selectable (must push cashout button before play for credit)

SW2      an 4-pac dip   #1  ON for 5 cent game
#2  ON for 10 cent game
#3  ON for 50 cent game
                               #1-2-3 OFF for BV inactivated
#1-2 ON for 25 cent game
                               #1-3 ON for dollar game
#2-3 ON for five dollar game
#1-2-3 ON for ten dollar game
#4 ON for JCM BV  and OFF for MARS BV

SW3     an 4-pac dip   #1 ON for first progessive signal out/ OFF no signal
#2 ON for second progessive singal out/ OFF no signal
#3 ON for third progressive signal out/ OFF no signal
#4 ON Progressive full lockup/ OFF Progressive partial pay to lockup

Hope that helps!
Jim

They take a JCM or MARS BV. Even a CVB model IVO. Ever hear of that one?
I have never worked on a BV for the 8800.

When you get a combination of Phantom and/or 7's in the first two reels you get "The Third Reel Reach Feature."
The third reel spins longer and extra sound is added as a teaser.

The respin goes "Tink", then whirl, whril, whril.  That's how I describe it.
Not as good as IGT Haywire. IMO

CVB model IVO. Ever hear of that one? <<<<Nope :72- I was just looking where the plug is and just seemed strange . Oh well, guess I need to find one  :103-

Title: Re: What model is my Universal ????????
Post by: uniman on May 20, 2009, 01:43:56 AM
I really didn't like the way Universal reduced the belly glass size to put the BV in so I never bought one of those.
I have a manual on the MARS and CVB (Coin Bill Validator of Deer Park New York), but I have no manual on the 8800, just the dip settings.
Too bad too, because I see a plug for backlit reels on this board. Must have been for the Mustang Game?

Hi Jim, when I replied to you last night about the % chip....pushing the button nine times, anyway. When I played it later I lost all reel sound except the "bell" when you win. Was thinking about an IGT under the menus and figured I must of changed something  :103- .  So I did a clear today and the sound was back  :3- . I let it sit with credits on it for a few hours and just tried to play it,no sound except for the bell. I did a clear again and the reel sound is back :103- :103-

Right before I moved out here to Nevada I fixed a Phantom Spin for a friend. It would lose sound right after a respin. Problem was wrong sound chip. I suspect that could be your problem.

The machine chip requests a particular sound for each event, i.e. coin in, win meter, and respin. If it requests a respin sound and your sound chip doesn't have it, the sound processor gets lost. Result is total lose of sound from that point on!

Check your sound chip. You will need to remove the daughter board as the sound chip is under it. Your sound chip should be labeled 8953-0044. All universal sound chips begin with 8953, the 0044 is the important part.

When the reels spin would you describe the sound as erie? When it respins, you should here a sound like Tink, then whirl, whirl, whirl.

Let me answer the sound question than I'll pull the board

It sounds "normal" to me until i hit the re-spin ....which is when all sound is lost.
Check your PM :)

Getting ready to try the sound and game chip (  :131- uniman ) . Oh,and get ready for some questions on the BV  :96-

Edit: Well, neither of them went well . The sound chip made a loud hum when turned on and the BV keeps giving a code of 94 (power off) I tried the DIP for Mars and JCM  :103- .

Hi Dan, I was checking out different sections about a week ago and was wondering WTH is the Universal section. Come to find out it was the brand of machine  :25- . I was reading through it and like two days later I ran across some of them. So I grabbed one ...neither of us knew what was wrong with it. But if I never seen this section that machine would still be sitting next to the other three Universals  :89- I was there yesterday and was able to get one of them working (Thanks Jim) . Ran out of time on the other two .

If I had to guess I would say that BV is a CVB.
Like I've said before, never have worked on one.
Do you have it connected to the 8800 board? Does it light up?

Yes,it is a CVB. When I went back to where I picked the machine up we dug out the other three machines that were sitting there. They had the BV in them and they had just the 9 pin connection plugged in. I see nolights anywhere  :103-.

Hi

Its been ages since i have seen one of those bv's. If i remember correctly there is a power supply board in the bottom of the bv. Should have mains feeding directly to it.

Ian

Thanks Ian. I see no other connections except on the side where it has a hookup that looks like from one of those DC power packs. I'll be back there fri and I'll see if any of the others have one. I'm almost postive when I was messing with them I thought one of them was cycling  :89- . Also, would you know what the DIP settings are on the side of the BV? And on the main board should the BV be set to Mars or JCM...only two choices.

Hope I can post everthing is working  :3-

Hi

On your photo - The bottom part where the Yellow Caution 115VAC sticker is is where the power supply is situated. You can remove the top part of the bv by turning loose the thumbscrews. You can then remove the top section of the bottom half. You should now be able to see the power supply board. I think there was a fuse on this board.
I think on some models the onboard power supply board was modified and power came from a secondary power supply (Sounds like this could be the case in your machine) Either way power will go from the main plug to the bottom section - Have a look on the plug coming from the machine side what the voltage is going to the corresponding side on the validator connector. Dipswitches unfortunately i cant advise on
Sorry cant give more info - Have not seen one of these for about 8 years. Have been looking for the manual but no luck so far.

Regards
Ian

Randy,
Check your aol email. And I see in the Submit New File section the dip settings for a CBV.
Dips 9 & 10 should be ON and 1-8 OFF.
Also your dips on the 8800 board on dipswitch #2 should be as outlined below. I don't see a setting for dip 1 for the CBV, assuming it is the same as MARS, which would be OFF

I do see you need to set 1, 2, or/and 3 for the denomination you want. Without 1,2,3 set might have been the reason for no power.
Jim

I tried everthing with SW2 and unless 1,2,3, are off I get a 94. I tried a bunch of ways with 4 on and off(and did a clear between all)
  The dip switches;

Finally got around to playing with it again. The picture shows a plug that has four wires. Two go right to a plug that is 110V and the other two go to the connection that makes contact when you slide the BV tray closed. So I installed a pigtail across them and BV now cycles without any errors  :3- . It still does not accept money(does not even try to pull it in )  :103- . I tried JCM and Mars. Will post back when I get it  :89-
Off to the Sigma section  :37-

Canadian DBV's?

No our equivelent of a DBV is a CBA and anything newer is now WBA (World Bill Acceptor).
Different head and different software - same transport.

What I don't have an answer to yet is ..... will an S+ with a WBA be able to accept all Canadian Bills.....

If you check a few post above you will see the sticker that says CVB...As far as I can tell it is a brand name ??? When I was working on getting it to take money i thought also that it may be set up for Candian bills...which I tried. If I can not find software for the update, the next post you see will be what I had to do to convert it over to a Mars that is in my 8 liner games....looks like it would fit and the plug is the same and its 110V. Just need to pin out the wires.

Actually it's CBV or Coin Bill Validator Inc. of Deer Park, New York.
Their logo looks like CVB.
They made bill validators that were installed in some Universals. Google searches show info up to 1997, but nothing after.
Maybe some of our "NLG seasoned veterans" may know what happened to them?
