The casinos usually set their progressives to about 0.005 or 1/2 of a percent or less up to a maximum of about 0.01 or one percent.

But since the progressive won't be hooked up to dozens of machines and played 24/7 at home, 5% or more is a better choice for home use.
The setting had NO effect on the machine's hit frequency or payout percentage as far as the machine is concerned. If you actually "count" the progressive amount in your bookkeeping, then you add the contribution % to the machine's % for the total payback.

So a machine that has a 92% chip and a progressive set to 5% will pay back 97%. BUT the jackpot odds and other odds won't change at all.

I set my progressive at a rate that equals 1c for each coin played. On a quarter themed slot this works out to be 4%. (.04)
I just like to make sure my progressive is working.....I have since dialed this back to 1.4% (.014) which equals 1 cent for 75c played.

This way when I put in 3 coins on my 3 coin games (all of my slots are 3 coins except a couple 5 line titles which require 5 coins to play 5 lines).

I set mine to the percentage I would have liked to have on my chip but didn't get. So for my quarter game with the 92+% payback, 5% brings it to a respectable 97+% but still under 100%. I guess I wanted the most odometer action I could get on the meter within the bounds of keeping a true casino feel of < 100%.  At 5% the machine will sometimes go up 2 cents on one bet, and if you play fast enough, you can get some odometer action going.

I set mine up with 25% contribution.  I like to see that odometer fly at all times.

Me too. Every quarter (token) increments 100 on the progressive!

I set mine to 1c per coin (quarter machine). Even at that rate it racks up pretty quickly.

You can slow the odometer function down. This way when you stop playing the odometer still continues to increment.

Gives you the feel of a true wide area progressive...

Funny you bringing that up Jay. I tried the slowest setting (99 or 100) and I even at 5% I can't really get that action going. What seems to be happening on my Bally is that the machine is waiting for the Mikohn to report back the current jackpot amount and will not light the buttons until it has the figure. There is definitely a longer pause after each spin and before the next idle mode since I set up the two-way communication. The truth is that I still don't know if the thing's going to work or not. It did not work properly in test mode, but the settings are the only ones that make sense and seem to be correct. I've gone over 13000 pulls without hitting the jp. The statistical expectation is 5000. Oh well. Murphy's law. Eventually I'll hit it and find out if it triggers the progressive reset properly.
