Title: Got a new monitor - cannot use DVI port - Help!
Post by: PinballWiz on July 29, 2009, 12:15:30 PM
I just got a nice HP widescreen monitor.  My video card has a DVI port on it.  I can use the monitor with a standard VGA cable and one of those adaptors that converts DVI to VGA.

What I am trying to do is to use a DVI cable to connect the monitor to the PC.  All I get is  'No Signal' on the monitor.

The PC is an HP.  I tried this with the included ATI card, and when I could not get it to work, I installed an NVidia GeForce card, but the same issue occurs.

Is there something else that I have to do to get this to work?  :8-

Thanks,
Rob

On the monitor there will be a menu button and you will have to change the input from VGA to DVI or vise versa, there is also likely settings for Svideo and possibly even analog input. You will want to be on the correct input to match.

Also if you have not booted the computer with the adapter/monitor combo attached then hooking up a monitor after the fact will not work.

I have rebooted, many times.  I did see the menu selection to switch to DVI.  The menu on this monitor only comes up when there is a valid signal.  My fear is that when I switch it to DVI that I will not be able to get the menu up again, should it not work.

Most of these modern monitors will seek all inputs for a valid signal automatically.  Sometimes if you just have the DVI-VGA converter plugged into the video card you will get the results you describe.  I would power down everything.  Turn on the Monitor First and then turn on the PC with just the DVI cable connected to see if that fixes the issue.  Also some of these monitors have an input switch (so you don't have to go through the menu's)  What's your monitor's model number?

It is an HP L2245wg 22-inch Widescreen LCD.

According to the manual off the website, it says that the "+" button acts as an input switcher when the menu is not active.  That should let you cycle between VGA and DVI.

OK, I will give that, and your prior suggestions a try when I get home.  As it stands now, I cannot even run this monitor at the recommended resolution.  I'll be glad to get over this hurdle.
