Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: jay on August 13, 2009, 10:18:53 PM If you have never been to Vegas before you don't really need a car however you might want to check the various car rental rates.
I was able to pick up a car for 9.99/day and keeping it for a week (parked) was cheaper than two taxi rides to/from the airport. Not sure if they are still that cheap. Vallet parking is free other than a tip. So there is no penalty to have a car like there are at some hotels. In Sanfrancisco I paid $40/night for parking. There is an airport shuttle for about $15/head (cheaper than a taxi) but if you are traveling with someone it kind of balances with a $28 taxi fare + tip and you don't need to wait for two hours going from property to property. The G2E conference has a series of buses broken up by strip location (north strip, south strip etc) that runs numerous times a day to most of the hotels so again you don't need a car. The mono-rail also runs to the LasVegas convention center. Even if I don't get such a cheap deal I usually rent a car for at least one day so I can drive out of Vegas to Laughlin/Bull Head city and visit Joey at the NLG head quarters and get to places like the Outlet malls for shopping. There are also other sites to see like the Valley of Fire, Hoover dam etc that all require a car. Getting a car from a non-airport location is sometimes cheaper than the airport so again if you don't need it full time getting it from a strip location is usually more convienient and saves a few $$. Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: fiddlefarter on August 13, 2009, 10:37:35 PM Thanks for the tips I don't think that I would like to drive in the city as we drive on the opposite side of the road here and our steering wheels are also on the opposite side, I might make a few people very cranky if I forget where I am. I am looking into different things to see and do while I am there so I will bite the bullet and hire a car to do a bit of travelling while I am there for my 2 week holiday. Hopefully I will be able to meet a few members while I am there :88-
Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: jay on August 13, 2009, 10:48:43 PM I wouldn't worry about that too much in Vegas. The traffic is conjested enough you just go with the flow at 3mph and no one follows any particular set of rules.
I once was driving in Manchester and I was coming back at 3.00am from the plant (after a major IT change) and I went around a traffic circle the wrong way. A guy on his motor bike came flying around the opposite way and layed it down to avoid an accident. I felt bad about this .. He was cranky but also very drunk so he didn't want any trouble and was up and on his way again. Vegas is 24/7 and there are no traffic circles in Vegas it just feels like a merry go round. If your a player booze is free and if your not its still cheap with lots of places offering $1 draft.....so thats another good reason not to drive.... Taxis are not too expensive so as noted before you don't need a car, but I would not use the brit standard as the excuse for not driving. I believe the fare is like $15 for 3 days of unlimited riding. It will even go all the way to downtown. If you want inexpensive food (old Las Vegas) stay in downtown. There's still coin out casinos there, and you can still get $7 buffets. It's not as glitzy as the strip, but you can always ride the bus to the strip and hang around until you have to go back to your room to sleep (if you choose to do so).
Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: StatFreak on August 14, 2009, 04:21:30 AM That's good advice Rick.
Given the economy, I would have said that you could find some real bargains if you wanted to stay on the strip, but it's unlikely that they would be available for the dates of the convention. Still, it might be worthwhile to check the websites of each of the major casinos and see what they have to offer during the time of your stay. From fiddlefarter's profile: Quote I am a workshop based electronics repair technician, as far as I know there are no other women working in this field. Fiddlefarter, I must introduce you to Operatrix Bell when you visit, then you'll know another.Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: fiddlefarter on August 14, 2009, 11:41:38 PM Yipee I'm in I always love a good party :71- My name is Sharron or fiddle what ever you feel comfortable with. Will it be hot or cold in November ?
Title: Re: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: brichter on August 15, 2009, 01:05:18 AM It's the colder season, if that's what you mean. Rarely does it ever get that cold in Las Vegas...
Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: Op-Bell on August 15, 2009, 03:03:20 AM It will be bloody freezing - temperatures hardly ever going much above 90F and sometimes as low as 70F at night.

It does get cold at night in the desert in winter. :71- You can expect lows in the 40's F in November. It could get into the low 30's. But it's a DRY cold. :97- :97- Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: Op-Bell on August 15, 2009, 04:14:12 AM True, we had winter last year - it was on a Thursday. The weight of snow broke a branch off one of my olive trees. But it was all gone by Friday.

November is a nice month to visit Las Vegas if you're not there to bake by or in the pool. Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: fiddlefarter on August 16, 2009, 11:18:10 PM So I guess I don't need to pack my bikini then :72- It would'nt be a good look for me anyway, way too old for that
Title: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: jay on August 17, 2009, 03:24:31 AM age is a state of mind.....
most of the pools are shut down in November but the hot tubs are usually available. Some of the casinos have evening pool parties....that have little to do with swimming albiet I would research that a bit on the internet. You might want the bikini top under a top or something.... Looking at this from the other side of the coin, an 82 year old is also biologically capable, so he could be over 100. :27- Title: Re: Re: G2E 2009 Get-Together and news Post by: brichter on August 18, 2009, 01:00:51 AM Buncha clowns around here, I tell ya!
