Title: A thought on Power
Post by: jdkmunch on August 24, 2009, 11:19:00 PM
Not to stir up the debate about if we should leave our slots on or off but I just thought of this:

On all cruise ships I have been on - they turn their machines off when they are docked.  So every day or few days all the machines get turned off for many hours - then on again.

There are a couple of reasons for this....

Gambling is not allowed in many jurisdictions so they probably don't come on until they are into international waters.

Secondly all of the ships use massive ground straps when they are docked. I would suspect that the harbor gounding likely rakes havoc with all things electronic.

My opinion on the ON/OFF debate is that if you leave your stuff on for long periods of time then shutting off your machines is harder on them if they have been on for only a short period of time. My rationalle is that as equipment stays on it slowly gets warmer... expanding as it does.... when you shut it off then it cools faster than it warmed. I would equate this process similar to frost heaves in ashfault - perhaps not so dramatic but along the same concept.
