Title: Belly Light Hummer
Post by: jdkmunch on October 29, 2009, 10:50:48 PM
My belly light just went out.  I replaced the bulb but I still get this flashing   -  The transformer hums like crazy - which it never did before.  Do you think it's the starter or the transformer?

Hello!

Do you have a Haywire kit you can put in there???

Try swaping the starter from the bulb in the top of the machine with the bottom one - then you will know if it's the starter or not....

Thats a ballast, not really a transformer. It's in SERIES with the filiments of the tube(s). if it hums without the tubes in, its internally shorted to ground.
Get it out of there! replace it with another one same current (wattage).
It's job is to "ring" with the 60 cycle power bringing the starting voltage to around 700 volts AC. Once the tube fires, it controls the total current thru the lamps to prevent them from runaway and destruction.
Disconnect it from the power until replaced.it's only going to trash your lamps and starter. New starters are in the $2 area...put a new one in with new lamps..cheap insurance.
