Title: Bally 5000+ does not accept coins & insert coin light is off ((FIXED))
Post by: SK8US on November 09, 2009, 03:01:51 PM
Hi, My Bally 5000+ does not accept coins and the insert coin light is off. I can open the coin rejector and it will credit coins and play with pay off on wins. So I guess my question is if the coin comparitor is malfunctioning will that keep my insert coin from displaying? Or is my insert coin light need fixing first to make my coin comparitor to start working? I do not see any lights on my coin acceptor and it looks like it has been disassembled from the previous owner. Also on this machine the coin comparitor is two parts so would I need to replace the part that the coins go through or the card part? Thanks so much for any help.
 Scott

First off I will say I am not a Bally person and mostly work on IGT

However with that said the fact that the light is off is probably and indication of a COIN-TILT meaning that it is not ready for acceptance.
I am doubtful its a bulb.

There are generally two parts to coin acceptance. The first part is the COIN comparitor. This compares the coin inserted with the sample coin in the comparitor.
The second is the coin optics. Either one of these detecting a fault a coin tilt can occur and your "acceptance light" would turn off.

Step 1 is to ensure there is a sample coin in the comparitor....
If the coin is rejected the diverter kicks in and the coin is passed to a bypass tray.

Assuming the coin passes this test the next step is the board you refer to ... and that is the coin optics. It makes sure that the coin dropped in passes by A-B-C optics.
The optics have to be triggered and then un-triggered in order within strict timing parameters.

From the perspective of a slot cheat if you used a metal shim you could by pass the comparitor test and inhibit the diverter, however the second test would not be beaten by a shim as the solid shim would keep all three Optics blocked.
The other common cheat was called stringing where a string was attached to a coin and then dropped into the machine. By pulling the coin back you could use the same coin to play all night. Again if the optics were triggered into reverse the machine
would lock up with a coin tilt. Other less inocululus problems occur as well. Sometimes my kid overfeeds the machine too fast and I get a coin-tilt.

Are there any error codes on the machine (ie numbers in the winner paid or creit meters)..,...

Thanks for your reply.
There are no error codes and if I lift the coin rejector I can put a quarter in and it will go to credits. I then can play the machine and it will pay on wins. On this coin mech the coil would need to be energized to pull in the reflector and it doesn't energize. As for a light I don't even think there is one. But again there is no tilt and no error code.
Thanks, Scott

Scott sounds like the lower coin optic are OK so problem will be in the comparitor. where the coil and rake are on back side of comparitor, fold up a piece of paper to hold the rake open. It should accept any and all coins that are the same size or smaller than the sample coin. CAUTION if you drop different size coins in the hopper, at pay out you will have a MESS. I don't  in anyway recommend this as a long time  fix if it works get a new comp.

I tried putting in different coins and only quarters would add credits. I see that when I power on the machine the coin rejector coil momentarily works then it is off and kicks out coins. I put in a working coil and does the same. The insert coin is never on, I replased the two lights. The Insert coin light never comes on even after payout or start up. Is there a lamp test I could do?
Thanks, Scott
Also when I mention coin rejector I am talking about the one in the coin mech. the reader seems to be working as it only read quarters, but all coins would go to the hopper if I manualy keep the rejector arm up

I did a light test and Insert coin does light up. The slug rejector coil fires but I didn't see the coin rejector work. Maybe I should just replace the coin acceptor?
But would this keep the insert coin from working?
Thanks,

Is the bulb burned out?

No, I did a lamp test and it lights up. Maybe I'll start by replacing the coin comparitor.

Scott      did you check the setting on the coin comparator    either on the unit itself, or on the slave unit (if it has two parts to it)  it is a sensitivity adj.  max clockwise  probably won't accept anything (of the sample coin)   max counterclockwise it should accept everything (of sample coin) provided that the unit itself is working

If it has a handle then check in the handle-box if the little metal flag is still attached with the spring. If not the optics in the handle-box will block the comparitor because they do not know the position of the handle (game start or over).

Hi Scott-  Could you post a follow up.  Are you up and running & what did you find?   :61-

Thanks,

Hay Scott,
Hope you got your 5000 Plus working.  If not let me tell you about mine.  I had the exact same problem- no coin in light but all else seemed like it wanted to play. Had no error codes and all the input & output tests seemed fine.  Got it working by finally doing a Ram Clear using the I/O board removal procedure someone sent me  :204-.   Following the ram clear all the defaults were restored- the coin in eluminated finally and the game played perfectly.

Setting the options was another issue.  With my homemade keypad I fought with the option setup procedure in the book but could not get the new option settings to take.  Finally I found the answer.  When setting the new option you have to enter the whole string of numbers again.  For example Credit Option 27, 0 is non-credit, 1 is standard credit, and so forth.  Entering "27 Enter" on the keypad only shows you the current setting: 00, or 01, ect. You cant change it yet. To change it you need to enter the whole string of numbers:  "2701 Enter"  Once I did it this way all the new options would take.

And now its brewsky time.  :222-

Fixed-- It was the MPU board.

I'm having the exact same problem. What was wrong with the MPU board?
