Title: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 02, 2009, 02:08:48 PM replace our S+ reel glass with a transmissive LCD screen?
I thought about this this morning... :79- An S+ reel glass is roughly 9" high and 17" long. If an old LCD computer screen or one of those Digital picture frames was cut to size and the backing paper with three 4"x3" rectangular holes were cut out to match the regular reel glass cutouts- This LCD could be placed in the reel glass area and be driven by an Ipod loaded with screen shots. Using the RNG signals sent out along the reel harness stopping the stepper reels could be used to switch the screenshots in an Ipod. Each screenshot could be loaded with favorite sound bites to play whenever the reels come to a stop using the headphone jack from the Ipod. The screens shots could include all kinds of animations and displays to come up over the top of the reels and entire area of the reel glass - just like the newest Williams games! Bunker, post up the pics of Frankie! Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 02, 2009, 05:31:40 PM "Frankie's" laying in a shallow grave at the moment... :96-
An update: I'm typing this post through an old 17" HP pavilion LCD desktop screen I just re-assembled. I had taken this apart completely this morning and found out that there are input flat ribbon cables placed along the bottom and left side of the LCD screen. These cables go through 2 small boards which drive the LCD and contain the power button, screen configurations, input jacks, etc. The Screen itself is made up of 3 layers. The main layer is the LCD. It is covered with a fairly thick protective clear Mylar film. This Mylar is easily removable but doesn't need to be. Behind it is another clear piece of glass stuck to the LCD screen. That can stay. Behind THAT is the white backing material. That can be cut out for the reels! However, the screen itself is a very dark shade and when I pulled it off - I found that it too dark for any reels to see through. I could see through the shade but it was too dark for what I wanted to do. If I were to cut the top of the LCD glass to fit into the reel glass area - I would not be able to display anything onto the LCD via an Ipod or a dedicated PC. What I need to find is a smaller LCD screen that will fit into the 9"reel glass area height and to also find one that doesn't have the dark tinted screen...something more clearer or less opaque. I am looking for an LCD screen in which the tinted material can be removed. Much like the LCD screens of a cordless telephone but with more resolution. Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: reho33 on December 02, 2009, 05:35:02 PM What we really want is a MAME'd up PE with hold buttons and an old screen from a laptop built into an old PE cabinet...........oh I think that has been done already?
Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: jay on December 02, 2009, 06:54:56 PM You can get any kind of polierized film.
Up here in canada you can buy these in the form of a license plate cover. Stops photo radar from seeing your plate. Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 02, 2009, 07:05:54 PM My problem is the screen is already tinted too dark to clearly
view the reels like on the Transmissive Reels machines. I took apart an old junky phone handset that had an LCD screen on it. I placed 9Vdc to various connections along the bottom of the screen. The entire LCD screen lit up displaying all the symbols like you would see on a wireless handset screen! But the real kicker was when I put my finger behind the screen while it was powered up - I could see my finger as plain as day! The telephone symbols (the little bell, time and date,etc...) appeared to be displayed over the top of my finger! The symbols were of very low pixel and resolution though just like what you would expect from a cheap handset LCD phone. All I need to find is a correct sized LCD screen that has fairly good resolution but is constructed with a clear film and not with the dark film that's mixed into the glass. That's how I would like to view the 3 reels on an S+! Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: stayouttadabunker on December 02, 2009, 08:06:33 PM I have the very first "Transmissive Avatar" ...lol
Using a 9Vdc battery with 2 wires... I placed an small alphanumeric LCD screen in front of my NLG avatar with the white backing paper removed and put the battery leads on the edges of the LCD screen contacts. My comic Avatar is clearly seen through the LCD screen even though jumbled symbols from the 9volts are lighting up the small panel display :72- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rb_qfELKiA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rb_qfELKiA) Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? k+ :3- Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: StatFreak on December 03, 2009, 12:26:54 AM Bunker won't need a MINI I game. He's going to buy a reel-sized LCD, program his own animations, and put this on an S+. :79- :184- :183- :199-
That was a cool short video -- you almost gave Wally some hair. (http://i50.tinypic.com/qyvc4h.jpg) Of course, a color LCD will cost more than a BW. I would suggest starting with a BW unit for initial experimentation so that it doesn't cost you too much when you @$^ it up the first time. Once you've figured out how it's all going to fit, then get a color LCD. :79- Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: waynelk on December 06, 2009, 10:54:15 PM First off Bunker I think you have way too much time on your hands and a mind like a steel trap. I would on the other hand like to see an S+ with digital reels. I liked the guy in the motorized lazyboy who got pulled over for DUI too. Shows initiative. How about a couple of GPS screens for the reel. Couple people selling non functioing ones on e-bay cheap and it would be about the right size. Good luck with the "project" and when it's finished how about posting some pics on the forum?

Post by: Gusco on January 15, 2010, 08:39:43 PM How about this material.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8S8tbQMp2k&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8S8tbQMp2k&feature=related) Not sure how its transparency is Seems durable thats for sure. Siemens make something very similar One article i read about two years ago stated the material only cost about $90 a square meter. Of course you woulod need something to drive the display. But the limits are endless being it is flexible. You could wrap the material around anything aparatnly Title: Re: Wouldn't it be cool to...? Post by: stayouttadabunker on January 15, 2010, 09:49:56 PM I saw that!
I wish I would of gotten some of that instead of a cheap little LCD I'm waiting for to come in the mail from China...LOL Would I ever take a hammer to it? uh....no :96- |
