With your SP731 chip, you'd have to set the dip switches 1&2 ON >
to enable you to program the amount you want your hopper to pay out.
If you set it rather low, like 50 or 100 credits, then the machine will go into hand pay mode anytime
the win is higher than what you've programmed the hopper to pay out.
I am not sure about this however, because I think the older chips that are dip switch programable,
go to the default of 300 coins....I could be wrong on this.
If you use a higher chip such as a SP1271, you get around this as the dipswitches are not used-
therefore, the hopper payouts can be really low such as 1 or 2 credits....
however, if you set it that low, you will be resetting it nearly every small win/hit.

It's not a question of whether or not the chips use the DIP switches. It's the fact that the older SP chips do not support separate hopper and credit limits. If you want to be able to have credits on the machine and still have all cashouts be hand pays, you need a newer SP chip.

You can (and should) turn on DIPs 1 and 2 when using the older chips so that you have the flexibility of programming and changing the hopper limit in the setup menu. However, since there is no separate credit limit for these chips, the hopper will always cash out anything on the meter. On the older chips, the hopper limit serves as the hopper limit, the credit limit, and the jackpot lockup threshold, all in one.

With the newer chips (SP1271 etc.), you can set the credit limit to 9999 and the hopper limit to 0*. This will put all payouts under 10,000 on the meter, but all cashouts will be hand pays. In addition to these, there is a separate jackpot limit that you can use to control which single wins become jackpot lockups (any single win over the "lower" jackpot limit will lockup as a jackpot).

*If you set the hopper limit to 1, it WILL try to cash out one credit if there is exactly one credit on the meter. For truly coinless cashouts, set the hopper limit to 0.
