Title: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: gabey on December 31, 2009, 05:08:07 AM Hello
Im new to the forums and would like to thank you guys for all the info. you provide. I couldnt find anything that would help til I stumbled on your site THANK YOU. Now to my problem. I just bought a older universal Silent Service. It worked fine til my friend came over and put nickels in it, (its a 25 cent machine) but they seem to register as quarters. Everything was cool til he hit the payout button. It played a weird tune like a jackpot tune or something. Then it went into some kind of lock up the yellow top light stayed on and the change lite was blinking. I reset the MPU and it got rid of the error codes for the most part now the error code 50 and 13 are on. Whats more on the coin comparitor it had a red LED that would come on it doesnt come on anymore and the coins just go staright through to the tray. I dont think Im getting power to it. Did i short it out or is there a reset. One more thing a coin jammed in the hopper I found it and its working fine now. Everything thing else works fine its just the coin issue. If you can help i would appreciate some tips Thanks and Happy New Year Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: knagl on December 31, 2009, 08:19:51 PM Welcome to :nlg-, gabey.
I don't know a whole lot about Uni's, but I know we have at least one Uni expert here ("Uniman") who I suspect will be along shortly to help you with your game. You've found the right place though -- we'll get your machine up and running. Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: jay on December 31, 2009, 09:24:23 PM I profess to know nuttin about Universals but I suspect you have 1 of 2 problems.
The first problem could be that you have a coin in TILT. This occurs when someone either jams the coin feed or tries to cheat. The normal procedure for a slot is to compare the coin with the sample comparitor and assuming it makes it past this test then it goes through a set of optics in a certain order. The latter is designed to prevent stringing (coin on a string being pulled back). Any time the optics see the coin in the wrong order it locks up with a tilt (or should). From what you told me the coin should have been rejected based on the sample coin (quarter vs nickle). When a coin is rejected there is a coin-rake (diverter plate) that is solinoid controlled that will dump the coin to the coin tray vs allowing it to go to the next test. It is possible that the solinoid is dead or that it has been wired tied back. One of the other possibilities is that the Coin Comparitor is dead and they wire tied the solinoid so it accepts any coin. The second problem could be that you have a coin jam. Not negating some issues with the comparitor allowing nickeles through but it doesn't really sound like you ran into a coin-tilt. It sounds like when your machine went to pay out in nickles that the nickles have become jammed in your hopper and/or the elevator. Elevators can be very finicky about the wrong size coins. I would start by emptying your hopper (i always use a towel to prevent damage to my table or hardwood floor and it makes putting the good coins back in that much easier). Eleminating the nickles. Next I would check your coin elevator and look for jammed coins - in particular the nickles. Uniman can probably be more specific about the universal platform. Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: uniman on December 31, 2009, 10:34:13 PM Hello fellow Uni owner. :88-
First of all, error 50 is door open, error 13 is "just powered up". These will remain until a coin is played. They don't prevent game play. But right now you can't get coins in for some reason. Let's back up. Your friend played nickels in a quarter machine? Did you have a sample quarter in the comparitor at the time? I don't see one in your picture. :103- Opps, nevermind previous statement, if coins are now going to tray then the rake is working. I see in your pic the wires to the solenoid and optics in front of the comparitor, they should be behind the comparitor mounting frame. So someone has moved them, no big deal, but makes me wondered what was messed with. I can't see in the pic if your comparitor is plugged in. (lower left side of comparitor) make sure it is. And jackpot music doesn't play when the cashout button is pushed. :103- :103- Very wierd. So let's try this; Turn on the machine, with the door open pull out on the white door switches (this simulates the door closed) Then turn the door lock to the locked position. (This blinds the door lock optic and now the machine thinks the door is closed, locked and ready for play) At this point the "incert coin" light should be blinking on the reel glass and you should see the comparitor red light on. (the comparitor red light should only be on when door is closed and locked) If the comparitor red light is on, then put a coin in and see if it counts it. Keep us posted, Uniman Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: gabey on January 01, 2010, 12:30:26 AM Thanks Guys
I have took your advice and started going through the system. I have devoted my attention to the rail solinoid and power to the comparitor. I found the compairtor isnt getting power in turn its not activating the sensor solinoid. The reason I found it would take nickels was because the srping hold the sensor was not attached, but when i attach it its too tight and wont allow any coin through. The plot thickens. Im getting power to all the optics but not to the solinoid thus it will not open and close the rail. All this because of a niclkle hmm... Thanks for getting me in the right direction. For the time I just shimmed open the rail diverter so now it will take quarters and allow them into the hopper, but also any coin activates it so this is only a temp fix. OH and HAPPY NEW YEAR Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: uniman on January 01, 2010, 02:52:42 AM Thanks Guys I'm not sure I am understanding you, but it sounds like you do not have a coin in the comparitor. That spring is there to hold the coin in place. See where it says "Slide to replace coin". Put a quarter there!I have took your advice and started going through the system. OH and HAPPY NEW YEAR And again, there is no power to the comparitor if the machine thinks the door is not closed, or not locked, or when the max coins in is achieved. And also during TILT errors. Now the diverter solenoid. In the hopper there is a stainless steel probe. When the hopper is full the coins in the hopper touches this probe, thus grounding a circuit. This circuit, when grounded, opens the diverter solenoid. And sometimes these diverter solenoids fail. A zip tie works well to keep the diverter closed. Good luck. Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: gabey on January 01, 2010, 03:33:29 AM Just wanted to say THANK VERY MUCH!!!! I did not know how the coin compairitor worked I wasnt sure where the coin went or how that worked. As for the unit itself the power line going to the compairitor was broken at the connector so that was preventing power. I just made a new connection and there its goes YEAHHH. Just in time to make some money on all my drunk friends hehe PROBLEM SOLVED. I dont have a manual so you guys are the best Anyways thank you and have a happy and safe New Years
Oh here's the Machine Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: uniman on January 01, 2010, 05:40:55 PM Just wanted to say THANK VERY MUCH!!!! For those that don't know, this game has nudging submarine bars. Ping-ping reel spin sound.Oh here's the Machine Glad to hear it's working. Now a word of caution; Actually using it for gambling is illegal just about everywhere. :81- And, that machine could have a winning streak costing you :56- :56- :56- Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: brichter on January 01, 2010, 07:50:07 PM Yup. Are you ready to kick down the $625 if they hit the top award?
I have a friend with an RWB who thought the slot machine wwould be a great addition to the quarterly poker tournament. After losing his butt 3 tournaments in a row, he now turns it off on tournament night. :72- :72- :72- Not to mention what would happen if one of those guys' wives were unhapppy they blew a hundred bucks or so and decided to complain to the authorities... :30- Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: gabey on January 01, 2010, 10:13:45 PM I didnt know about the nudging feature at first I thought it was getting stuck. After a few times i reallized that it was part of the game. Also this machine pays out alot I will never make money on this machine if I used it that way. My friends would never win because they never have money so I just use it as a show piece.

Your game should make Ping-ping sound when the reels spin and sort of a "aoogh, aoogh" sound when the submarine bars nudge. If not, you may have the wrong sound chip. Two Universal games have specific sound chips. They are Silent Service and Phantom Spin. And both games use the 8800 mpu board. Have found several instances where game and machine eproms have been moved to a different board but not the sound chip. I think that is one of Universal's best 8800 board games. I have an Ultra Series game called Magic Doubles, it is a clone of Silent Service. (Different symbols but same paytable and virtual stop table.) And different sound too. Title: Re: Universal Silent Service troubles Post by: gabey on January 02, 2010, 09:12:22 PM I would like to ask one more question. What do the dip switches control on the MPU? Is there a manual that contains these controls? Thanks
