Title: Protocol Mismatch / COMM ERROR - Vision Game Change
Post by: mah on January 16, 2010, 10:19:34 PM
I just changed a Vision Double Double Diamond to a Diamond Mine.  Did a ram clear, installed all 4 chips (gme 1, gme 2, SB000253, and Ver. VS0096X0.

During MSVERIFY I get a COMM ERROR

It continues to run tests and eventually display's, "PROTOCOL MISMATCH".

Also, there are small dots in the lower right hand corners of both the credit display and the coins played display.

What did I do wrong??? :103-  :99-

Please help.  Thanks

Did you install the new Flash card with the correct ATA and BGM files?

Hey Kirk,

I assume so.  This is the kit I bought from another member.  It came complete including the flash card.  For a brief moment after the key change, it does display the Diamond Mind but then go's into the protocol error.

Ron,

My RFA looks like it's pretty old:  "RFA 1.00.11 - 5/01/98"

I've been looking for an RFA updater.  Although I'm pretty sure I need this to get the Diamond Mine going, my older machine probably needs other upgrades as well.

This is the machine....... and the monitor.

Mike: In the option menu Download Option:(3.5) Video Display (LCD) Option (3.5.2) The pass=through operation is reserved for special purposes only , such as reprogramming the LCD . Thats all it says in the manual will look for more . Ron.......(SLOTS OF FUN)  :88-

Mike: Found out how to update it . Install the new BGM card in the top slot of the lcd and install the RFA card in the left side of the LCD . power on the lcd indicates the status of the game replacement . When the LCD displays "enter new time" turn power off . remove the RFA card and power back on . when VFD indicates that the machine is experiencing a RAM error turn the key .When prompted by the message on the VFD,Press switch on processor board, hold for 2-3 seconds then release. The game change is complete . Ron (SLOTS OF FUN)  :88-

While I agree with the others in that your RFA OS should be upgraded!  :89-

I'd like you to look at this photo-shopped photo.
I hate seeing harnesses really pulled and stretched like that.  :8-
I try to open the LCD only halfway because there's so much strain on the last two pins on that 10-pin Netplex COM harness.
If you get a chance, press on the white tab on top of the Molex and wiggle it out.
Then try grasping the orange wire close to the connector housing and push it back in as far as it will go.
The housing body where the orange wire is inserted is barely visable through the plastic.
Pull and push back on the wire watching closely to see if it's fully inserted into the connector body.

Do the same for the red wire just above the orange one.
If any of those wires and pins are pulled back too far - you will get Comm Errors.
They need to be FULLY inserted as far as they will go to ensure a good contact
with the header pins of the LCD computer circuit board.

"Protocol Mismatch" is definitely a Version chip jurisdiction mismatch.
Try a VS009GX1 instead...I use that for most of my Vision kits.

Finally, if you're unsure of what RFA version is installed in the computer.
It does not come up in the LCD menus so I've dound that the best way to check is
to video tape the boot up sequence on the LCD screen.
The RFA number very briefly comes up on the second page of the LCD Boot Up sequence.
I use a video camera then watch it in slow motion to see the RFA version number.

mah,
I discovered something the other day and I could be wrong about the Version chip.
I haven't got around to checking it out but this is what happened...>>>

I have a couple of flash cards for the top slot with Ms.Little Green Men on them.
One of them gives me a "Protocol Mismatch" error...while the other one - works fine.
The MPU is using the same Version chip...VS009GX1  !!!
I set the two cards aside and marked them as to which is which.

Tonight, when I get home - I will read both of the cards, display the folders side by side on my desktop screen,
and see what's the difference.
I'm sure the card that's giving me the "Protocol Mismatch" error is missing something... :89-

Okay,
I did some tests with my Vision machine.
I get the "Protocol Mismatch" whenever I try to run what I thought was a bad Ms.LGM flash card.
It was actually my Munster Match BGM flash card.
That's why I kept getting the error.
What I did learn is that I would get the same "Protocol Mismatch" error if I installed any other BGM flash card.

However, I would get the "Bonus Game Not Supported" red screen if I switched the SG GME1&2 chips.
Those SG chips must "support"  the BGM game.

For those of you that don't know - "BGM" means the "Bonus Game Module" or
the flash card that goes into the top slot card of the Vision LCD computer.

So far, the only thing that happens when I change the Version chip is that
I get a blue VFD screen message that says that the version chip was changed.
Either VS chip works fine with the DD Run, or Ms.LGM games.

As far as I can tell...you have either the wrong BGM card or the wrong SB chip.
When I purposely install the wrong SB chip on a known working game -
I get the "CRC" blue VFD screen error and the red LCD screen "BGM Not Supported" error.
