I live in California.

I still have a 5KW generator in the garage because PG&E can't keep the power on even when the weather is good. :30- :30- :30-

There are some VERY nice 10KW Gas/LPG/Natural Gas Gensets available for a decent price these days, complete with autoswitch panel and autostart/cooldown.It's a good investment for places that get snowed in for days.
I too had a 5,500Watt "Contractors Special" when I lived in Californication. It saved my ass more times then I can remember.
I had one of those transfer panels that would switch FOUR important circuits to the genset that was plugged into it.
The BIG problem with the "portable" generators is they have to spin at 3600RPM to make 60 cycle power.3600 is REDLINE for those engines! so they beat themselves to death. Your neighbors will LOVE the noise. The 10KW units run at 1800RPM, much quieter and last a long time. Start and transfer time is usually under 7 seconds.

Had mine since 85 (before the Loma Prieta quake, I lived 7 miles from the epicenter), it's not given me any problems in the time I've owned it. Keep the oil changed every 40 hours or so and don't let the gas sit in it, it'll last forever. Improper storage and lack of maintenance are the real killers, not running at the designed engine speed. It ran for 9 days straight one El Nino year when we were without power (1995?), only being shut down to change the oil. I'd imagine if you bought one nowadays, what you say might hold true. Every one I've seeen now is a pretty big pile of steaming excrement, unlesss you're paying well into 4 figures for it.

My next door neighbor when I lived up there was too far to hear it, my next door neighbor here complained the first time I fired it up.

He started singing a different tune when I offered to plug an extension cord in for him... it's amazing how peoples' attitudes change when you have something they need.  :89-

I did the same. When we had power failures I would toss a power cable over the fence to the neighbor. Now that "Noise" was music to his ears....

we too have one of those small gens  I use to take to pinball show to  fire up  1 pinball at a time but I haven,t ran it in 4 years It didn,t even try to start ,We are already looking for a big one that will do whole house, Not going a few trips to casino  would pay for  one, When we lived in nj  we went to pa slot parlors every day min 6 times a week took $400 between   us ussally  left with 0 , they miss us at end we got  $125 a day in free play money, they still call  ask us to come they say 500 miles isn,t that far :208- to drive, harrahs will fly us from  nc to to ac  . now we are stuck with nc harrahs  which is 500 mile rt trip or 400 mile to tristate if tri state was 20 miles I wouldn,t go back  Thanks for all the kind words   This am phone started working now we just need some warmer weather
